Chapter 1 - The Speaker Comes Alive

The static hissed through the room like a snake waking up in the brush.

For a second, the dozen raised pistols remained locked on the boss, fingers white-knuckled against cold steel, waiting for the command to fire. K19 smiled, a tight, vicious curve of the lips, assuming the audio feedback was just some random electrical failure in the old private club. He opened his mouth to give the final order, to seal the fate of the man who had built the empire from dust.

Then a voice filled the room. It wasn’t a recording. It was live, breathing, and dripping with an icy, metallic calmness.

—You forgot to check the ventilation shafts, K19,— the voice echoed from the ceiling speakers.

Every head snapped upward. The color drained from K19’s face, washing away the smug arrogance in a fraction of a second. His eyes bulged as he stared at the small metal grille set high in the mahogany wall.

The boss didn’t flinch. He adjusted the cloth sling where the baby slept, its chest rising and falling in a rhythmic, undisturbed tempo against his heart.

—Who’s that?— shouted one of the syndicate’s veteran enforcers, his hands trembling violently as he kept his gun leveled at the boss. —Show yourself! Turn that off!—

—I’m already here, Leo,— the hidden voice replied. It was the voice of Ghost, the syndicate’s master cryptographer and intelligence broker whom everyone thought had vanished three months ago during a raid across the bay. —Or rather, I’ve been watching every single move you’ve made since K19 promised you a piece of the boss's throne.—

K19 took a half-step back, his boots scraping against the concrete floor. Panic flickered behind his cold, calculating eyes. —It’s a trick,— K19 snarled, his voice rising an octave, trying desperately to regain control of the men. —He’s playing mind games! Shoot him! Shoot him now before he——

—Before what, K19?— Ghost interrupted, his tone sharp as a razor blade. —Before the audio logs of you negotiating with the federal prosecutor go public? Before the men hear how much you sold the diamond shipment for, and to whom?—

The war dog at the boss's feet let out another low, rattling growl, its golden-brown eyes fixed entirely on K19. The muscles beneath the beast's thick fur bunched like coiled steel. The dog didn’t need to be told who the enemy was; it had smelled the betrayal on K19's skin weeks ago, every time the adviser stepped into the private quarters uninvited.

Leo, the enforcer whose gun was pointed closest to the boss's chest, lowered his barrel by an inch. His brow furrowed in deep confusion. —What is he talking about, K... K19? What files?—

—Don't listen to a dead man's ghost!— K19 screamed, drawing his own pistol and aiming it directly at the speaker grille, firing two frantic shots into the ceiling. Plaster rained down in a fine white powder, dusting the shoulders of the nervous lieutenants. —He's lying! The boss took the diamonds! The boss sold us out!—

The boss finally spoke. His voice was quiet, steady, and carried the heavy, undeniable weight of decades of absolute authority.

—You talk too much, K19,— the boss said softly, shifting the baby slightly as it stirred in its sleep. —A true leader listens. You always preferred the sound of your own voice.—

—Shut up!— K19 lunged forward, his face red with fury and desperation. He raised his weapon, shifting his aim from the ceiling to the boss's forehead. —Kill him! All of you, pull the triggers! Now!—

The loyalty of the men hung by a microscopic thread. They looked at the boss, who stood entirely unprotected, carrying an innocent child against his chest, refusing to flinch. Then they looked at K19, whose face was twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated panic.

And then, the war dog moved.
