Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Traitor

Clara pulled the sleek black flash drive from her clutch and held it up between her fingers.

"Don Moretti," Clara said, turning her attention to the mob boss. "Grant told you he was acquiring the Calloway waterfront deeds for your company. What he didn't tell you was that three weeks ago, he transferred two million dollars of your laundering funds into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands under his own name."

Moretti’s head snapped toward Grant, his dark eyes instantly flashing with lethal fury. "What?!"

"She's lying! She's lying to cause trouble!" Grant shrieked, sweating profusely now. "Don Moretti, don't listen to her!"

"This flash drive contains forty years of financial records preserved by my grandmother, Pearl Calloway," Clara continued calmly, holding up the drive. "Including the full audit trail of the funds Grant stole from your syndicate while pretending to negotiate for my house."

Victor tapped his cane gently against the floor. "My cyber team has already broadcasted these exact audit files to the Federal Financial Crimes Bureau and the State Attorney General. In about three minutes, federal agents will enter this building with warrants for Grant Vance’s arrest—and for every shell corporation associated with your rogue operations, Moretti."

Moretti realized he had been completely outmaneuvered. His empire was collapsing, not by bullet or bomb, but by the brilliant legal precision of Pearl Calloway's granddaughter.

Moretti turned on Grant like a ravenous beast. He grabbed Grant by the lapels of his tuxedo, slamming him violently against the marble balustrade.

"You stole from me?!" Moretti roared, his voice shaking the terrace. "You brought the Feds to my front door?!"

"No! Please! Don! It was a mistake! Clara made this up!" Grant sobbed, tears spilling down his cheeks as he cowered against the stone rail. "Clara, please! Tell him it's not true! Please save me!"

Clara stepped up to the balustrade, looking down at the man who had lied to her, tried to burn her family legacy, and hurt her puppy.

"You told me that night in the rain that I didn't know what I was dealing with, Grant," Clara said softly, her voice carrying a satisfying finality. "You were right. You were dealing with a Calloway."

At that exact moment, the heavy glass doors of the hotel lobby burst open.

"Federal agents! Nobody move!"

A dozen heavily armed FBI agents flooded the ballroom, badges gleaming under the lights. Within seconds, Moretti and his lieutenants were tackled to the floor and handcuffed.

Grant dropped to his knees on the terrace floor, sobbing uncontrollably, clutching at Clara’s hem. "Clara! Please! Don't let them take me! I'll give you everything back! I'll beg on my knees!"

Clara slowly pulled her dress away from his grasp.

May you like

"Tonight, Grant," Clara quoted Victor's words with a triumphant smile, "you beg. But nobody is listening."

The federal agents pulled Grant to his feet, snapping heavy iron handcuffs onto his wrists, and dragged him away screaming into the night.
