Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the Ballroom

The Grand Harbor Ballroom was filled with the city's elite—politicians, wealthy investors, and high-society figures, all sipping champagne under crystal chandeliers.

At the center of the VIP terrace stood Don Moretti, an arrogant, heavy-set man in an expensive tuxedo, surrounded by armed bodyguards. Beside him stood Grant Vance, holding a glass of scotch, grinning like a man who had just won the lottery.

"I told you, Don Moretti," Grant boasted, taking a sip of his drink. "Clara Whitmore is soft. She's just a simple girl who loved a dog and a broken old house. After the fire, she was terrified. She'll sign over the waterfront deeds tonight without a fight."

"She better," Moretti grunted in a rough voice. "Because if those deeds aren't signed by midnight, Vance, I'm throwing you off the harbor pier."

"Don't worry," Grant chuckled arrogance. "She has nowhere else to turn."

"Are you quite sure about that, Grant?"

A clear, commanding voice echoed across the terrace.

The chatter in the VIP area instantly died down.

Grant turned around, his smile freezing instantly on his face.

Clara walked onto the terrace. The emerald green velvet dress hugged her posture perfectly; the diamond necklace caught the glitter of the chandeliers. She walked with supreme grace, her head held high, looking every bit like royalty entering her court.

Beside her walked Victor Blackwood, flanked by four impeccably dressed lieutenants.

Grant dropped his glass of scotch. It shattered on the marble floor. CRACK.

"C-Clara?!" Grant stammered, his face turning pale. "What... what are you doing here?! And why are you with Blackwood?!"

Don Moretti’s eyes narrowed into slits as he recognized Victor. His hand went instinctively toward his jacket, but Victor’s men subtly shifted, revealing their own concealed holsters.

"Miss Whitmore is here to finalize our business, Mr. Vance," Victor said smoothly, taking a champagne glass from a passing waiter and offering it to Clara.

Clara took the glass, took a delicate sip, and looked directly into Grant’s trembling eyes.

"You thought I was weak, Grant," Clara said softly, her voice carrying through the quiet terrace. "You thought because I loved my home and cared for an innocent puppy, I was easy to manipulate."

"Clara, listen to me—" Grant started, taking a step forward.

"Shut your mouth," Clara commanded, her tone so sharp that Grant actually flinched back.
