Chapter 5 - The Master Strategy

Clara opened her grandmother’s letter. As she read Pearl’s familiar, elegant script, her heart swelled with pride and determination.

Dearest Clara, If you are reading this, the shadows of the past have finally caught up with our home. Do not be afraid. The Blackwood family owes their empire to our family's discretion. Victor Blackwood is a man of honor in a world of monsters. Trust him, but rely on your own mind. The deeds in this box give you controlling interest in the Grantham Port Development. The corrupt developers who lured your fiancé will try to destroy you. Use the ledger. Expose their greed. Show them that a Calloway woman never bows to intimidation. Give Pip an extra treat for me. Love always, Grandma Pearl.

Clara folded the letter carefully and placed it inside her coat pocket. She looked up at Victor Blackwood.

"What happens to Grant now?" she asked.

"Grant owes four million dollars to the Moretti family—the rogue faction trying to force a hostile takeover of my shipping routes," Victor said coldly. "Tonight, Grant promised Moretti he would deliver your property deeds in exchange for wiping his debt. Since he failed, Moretti will likely eliminate him before dawn."

"No," Clara said suddenly, her voice cutting through the room like a blade.

Victor raised an eyebrow. "No?"

"Ending Grant in a dark alley is too easy," Clara said, her eyes flashing with dangerous intelligence. "He tried to ruin my life, he tried to steal my home, and he hurt my dog. I want him to face the full force of everything he tried to do to me."

Victor’s lips curled into a rare, genuine smile. "I am listening, Miss Whitmore."

"Grant’s legal firm represents the Moretti family's shell corporations," Clara outlined rapidly, her instincts as a senior legal assistant taking over. "If we use my grandmother’s ledger, we can prove that Grant embezzled funds from both Moretti and the city council. We don't just destroy Grant—we dismantle Moretti’s entire legal shield in one move."

Victor leaned back in his chair, a look of profound admiration in his eyes. "You have your grandmother's sharp mind, Clara. How do you propose we execute this?"

"We let Grant think he succeeded," Clara said coldly. "We set a trap for tomorrow night at the Waterfront Gala. When Moretti and Grant show up to claim the property deeds... we give them exactly what they deserve."

Victor stood up, buttoning his coat. "Tonight, they think you are a defenseless woman crying over a ruined house. Tonight, they sleep in arrogant victory. But tonight, Miss Whitmore... they prepare to beg you."
