Chapter 9 - The Debt of Honor

Morning broke over the city. The rain had finally cleared, leaving behind a crisp, bright sunrise that painted the sky in shades of gold and pink.

At Julian Hart’s private estate on the hills overlooking the bay, the grand iron gates stood open. Inside the sunlit courtyard, a luxury medical transport van was parked.

Julian Hart stood on the terrace, wearing a plain white shirt, his hands tucked into his pockets. For the first time, he didn't look like an underground mob boss; he looked like a man who had carried too much weight for far too long.

Thomas sat nearby on a garden bench, his wounds bandaged, smiling as he watched Cyrus chase a wooden stick across the manicured green lawn.

Maisie stood near the edge of the fountain, listening to the gentle splash of water.

Leo stood next to Julian, nervous, holding a thick legal envelope.

"Mr. Hart," Leo began, "the money you gave us... we used some for Maisie’s medical tests, but we still have most of it. We can give it back—"

Julian raised a hand, stopping him mid-sentence.

"Keep the money, kid," Julian said, his voice quiet and sincere. "In fact, check the envelope in your hand."

Leo opened the envelope. Inside were clean, legal title deeds to a stunning five-acre estate in upstate New York, along with trust fund documents established under Maisie’s name, guaranteeing her medical care, education, and living expenses for life.

Leo’s eyes widened in disbelief. "Mr. Hart... this is millions of dollars. We can't accept this!"

"You didn't just save my brother's life last night," Julian said, looking out over the bay. "You showed me that I was living in a cage worse than the one I kept Cyrus in. I thought power was about making people fear you. I was wrong."

Julian walked down the steps of the terrace and stopped before Maisie. He knelt on one knee in front of her, taking her small hand gently in his hands.

"Maisie," Julian said, his voice trembling slightly. "I spoke to Dr. Vance, the chief of neuro-ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins. He reviewed your scans this morning. He believes that with a new procedure developed in Switzerland, there is an eighty percent chance you can regain your vision."

Maisie blinked her sightless eyes, a quiet gasp escaping her lips. "Really?"

"Everything is paid for," Julian said warmly. "The jet, the surgeons, the recovery center. You leave next week."

May you like

Maisie smiled—a bright, beautiful smile that lit up the entire morning courtyard. "Will Cyrus come with me?"

Julian chuckled softly, reaching out to pat the massive dog who had trotted over and placed his head right between Julian and Maisie. "He won't let anyone put you on a plane without him, little girl."
