Chapter 3 - The Unpayable Price

Julian Hart stood in the center of the ring, looking at the blind child cradling a killer dog. The contrast was stark, almost surreal.
Leo, released by the guards, ran into the ring and dropped to his knees beside his sister, pulling her into a desperate hug. "Maisie! Oh God, Maisie, are you okay? Did he bite you?"
"I'm fine, Leo," she said, resting a hand on Cyrus, who remained motionless, guarding her.
Julian stepped closer, his expensive leather boots coming to a stop right next to them. He pulled a thick leather briefcase from Marcus's hand, placed it on the dirt, and popped the brass latches. Inside were tightly wrapped stacks of crisp hundred-dollar bills—one million dollars in cold hard cash.
"A deal is a deal," Julian said, looking at Leo. "One million dollars. It's yours."
Leo stared at the money, his jaw slack. For a boy living in a crumbling two-room apartment, struggling to pay for Maisie’s medicine and basic needs while dodging mob debt collectors, this was life-changing wealth.
"Take it, Leo," Julian urged, his eyes dark and unreadable. "Take your sister and your money, and get out of my sight."
"Wait," Maisie said, standing up with Cyrus rising instantly to her side, his shoulder pressed against her hip like a living shield. "What happens to Cyrus if we take the money?"
Julian frowned. "The dog is a dangerous asset. He belongs to my organization. Now that I know he can be controlled, I'll have my men re-train him for protection detail."
"No," Maisie said firmly, stepping forward until her cane touched Julian’s shoe. "If you keep him, you will lock him up again. Your men are afraid of him, and fear makes people cruel. He will bite someone again, and you will kill him."
Julian’s eyes narrowed. "He is my property, little girl. I bought him from a combat kennel in Eastern Europe for two hundred thousand dollars. He is not a pet."
"I don't want the money," Maisie said simply.
Leo gasped, grabbing her arm. "Maisie! What are you saying?! That's a million dollars! We can fix your eyes! We can buy a house!"
"Leo," Maisie turned her sightless eyes toward her brother, her voice breaking with an emotional maturity far beyond her years. "If we take money bought with his pain, my eyes will never see anything good. We keep the dog, or we leave with nothing."
The entire room went dead silent again. Rejecting Julian Hart’s money was an insult; rejecting his terms was dangerous.
Julian stared at Maisie. For the first time in twenty years, the ruthless mafia lord felt genuine astonishment. He looked down at the briefcase containing a million dollars, then at the blind girl holding the neck of a dog that could tear a man's throat out in three seconds.
"You're turning down a million dollars for a broken dog?" Julian asked softly.
"He's not broken," Maisie replied softly. "He was just surrounded by people who didn't know how to heal."
Julian stood silent for a long minute. A dangerous storm seemed to pass through his eyes before settling into something cold and calculated.
"Keep the money," Julian said unexpectedly. "And take the dog."
Leo looked up, tears springing to his eyes. "Really? Mr. Hart, thank you—"

"However," Julian interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with a dark promise. "Nothing in my world is free, boy. You take my dog and my money, you belong to me now. If that animal ever steps out of line, if he ever hurts one of my men or causes trouble on my turf... I won't just kill the dog. I will hunt down everything you love."
Julian turned on his heel and walked toward the dark exit of the arena, his heavy coat billowing behind him. "Give them the money. And clear the room."
