Chapter 5 - The Siege at North Docks

The rain fell in sheets over the abandoned container yards of the North Docks. Industrial crane structures loomed like giant rusted skeletons against the black night sky.
A fleet of black SUVs sat parked behind an old shipping warehouse, their engines idling quietly. Inside the command vehicle, Julian Hart sat staring at monitors displaying thermal feeds of the target building—a three-story concrete warehouse heavily fortified by the Moretti family.
The rear door of the SUV opened, blowing wet wind inside. Marcus entered, followed by Leo, Maisie, and Cyrus.
Julian turned his head. When his eyes landed on Maisie holding Cyrus’s leather leash, his cold expression flickered with surprise and frustration.
"Marcus," Julian said, his voice dropping dangerously low. "Why the hell is the girl here? I told you to bring the dog."
"She wouldn't let the dog go, Boss," Marcus said quickly, ducking his head. "And the dog wouldn't get in the car without her. He almost tore Viktor’s arm off when we tried to lead him by force."
Maisie stepped into the warm interior of the command vehicle, guided by Cyrus. "If Cyrus goes into danger, I go with him, Mr. Hart. He doesn't fight for money or orders. He only fights to protect."
Julian looked at the blind girl. Her face was pale from the cold rain, but her eyes were firm, unyielding. He looked down at Cyrus, who stood calmly beside her, indifferent to the high-tech tactical gear and heavily armed men filling the vehicle.
"Your brother is inside?" Maisie asked quietly.
"Yes," Julian said, his voice unusually tight. "Thomas. He's nineteen. The Moretti family took him six hours ago to force me to give up my shipping routes. They have eight snipers on the upper floors and tripwire explosives throughout the main hallway. My tactical teams can't breach without triggering the charges."
"Cyrus can clear the hallway," Leo said nervously, holding Maisie's shoulder. "But you can't just send him in like target practice!"
"He doesn't need to be target practice," Maisie spoke up, her mind working rapidly through the sounds of rain and engines. "Cyrus doesn't use light. He uses scent and sound. If you turn off the power to the warehouse, your men will be blind, Moretti’s men will be blind, but Cyrus will own the building."
Julian stared at her. A slow, dark realization dawned on him. "A total blackout. Moretti’s snipers rely on high-grade night-vision goggles. If we blast the main transformer with an EMP jammer, their electronic scopes will burn out instantly."
"And Cyrus will hear every heartbeat in the dark," Maisie whispered, resting her hand on the dog's head. "He will find your brother. But I have to be at the perimeter. He needs to hear my voice to come back."
Julian looked at the tactical map, then at the clock ticking down on the screen. Thomas had less than an hour before Moretti’s execution deadline.
"Marcus," Julian ordered, his tactical instinct kicking in. "Deploy the EMP unit at the main substation. Set up a secure perimeter at Gate 4. The girl stays in the armored van with me."

Julian leaned down until he was at eye level with Cyrus. The massive dog met the mob boss's gaze without fear, without rage—only deep, steady intelligence.
"Bring my brother back," Julian whispered to the dog. "And I give you my word as a Hart... no one will ever put you in a cage again."
