Chapter 9 - THE PROPOSAL

Three months later, Holden arranged a private evening that Evelyn would never forget.
He rented out the entire top floor of the city’s finest rooftop restaurant overlooking the harbor. The sky was painted in brilliant shades of pink, orange, and purple as the sun sank below the horizon. String lights flickered softly above them, and a string quartet played gentle classical music in the background.
Evelyn wore a stunning emerald-green silk dress that complemented her eyes, her hair falling in elegant waves over her shoulders. Holden wore a classic black tuxedo, looking every bit the refined gentleman he had chosen to become.
Lily sat at a small table nearby, dressed in a cute yellow sundress, happily coloring in a storybook while Marcus quietly stood guard near the elevator, smiling warmly at the family.
After an exquisite dinner, Holden stood up from his chair and walked around the table to Evelyn. He held out his hand to her.
Evelyn smiled, taking his hand as she stood up. “Holden, what is all this? You’ve been secretive all week.”
Holden didn't answer right away. Instead, he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He slowly lowered himself onto one knee on the polished marble floor.
Evelyn gasped, covering her mouth with both hands as tears instantly welled in her eyes.
“Evelyn,” Holden began, his voice deep and filled with emotion. “Four years ago, I lost you because I was too blind to see what truly mattered in life. I thought power and wealth were enough to protect the people I cared about. But you and Lily showed me that real strength comes from love, family, and second chances.”
He opened the velvet box, revealing a flawless, brilliant five-carat diamond ring that sparkled under the warm lights.
“You brought light into my dark world,” Holden continued softly. “You saved my soul, and you gave me the greatest gift of my life in our daughter. I promise to love you, protect you, and honor you for every remaining day of my life. Evelyn Vance, will you marry me?”
Evelyn wept tears of pure joy, nodding repeatedly. “Yes! Yes, Holden, a thousand times yes!”
Holden slid the ring onto her finger, stood up, and pulled her into a passionate kiss as the string quartet swelled into a beautiful melody.

Lily clapped her hands happily from her table, running over to wrap her arms around both of their legs. “Yay! Mommy and Daddy are getting married!”
Holden scooped Lily up into one arm while holding Evelyn tightly with the other, kissing both of their foreheads under the starry night sky. The past was forgiven, the shadows were banished, and their future was finally bright.
