Chapter 3 - A PROMISE IN THE DARK

By 3:00 AM, the estate was bustling with quiet, lethal activity. Dozens of heavily armed men in black tactical gear were patrolling the perimeter, while armored SUVs lined the long circular driveway. Inside the war room, digital maps of the city flickered across massive monitors, tracking vehicle movements and phone signals across every borough.
Holden sat at the head of the conference table, staring at a printout of Dominic Moretti’s known safehouses. His phone buzzed on the glass surface. He picked it up immediately.
“Speak,” Holden ordered.
A rough, gravelly voice answered from the speaker. “Holden. I heard you had an unexpected guest arrive at your front door tonight.”
Dominic Moretti.
Holden’s grip on the phone tightened until the glass casing cracked under his fingers. “If you’ve hurt Evelyn, Dominic, there is no corner of this earth where you can hide from me.”
Dominic laughed—a dry, wheezing sound that echoed with malice. “Always so dramatic, Holden. The sophisticated billionaire playing dress-up in expensive suits. You thought you could take my docks, steal my revenue, and buy off my politicians without consequences? You forgot where we came from.”
“Where is she?” Holden demanded, his voice dropping to a terrifying register.
“She’s alive,” Dominic replied smoothly. “For now. She’s bleeding, but she’s tough. She refused to tell me where the kid went. Imagine my surprise when my scouts told me the little brat walked right into your courtyard. You have a daughter, Holden. A weak spot.”
“Listen to me very carefully, Dominic,” Holden said softly. “You return Evelyn to me by sunrise, unharm, and I will let you keep your life. You can take your money, leave the country, and never return. That is the only deal you will ever get from me.”
“You don't make the terms anymore, Cross!” Dominic snapped, his tone turning venomous. “Here is how this works. Tomorrow at midnight, you come to the abandoned ironworks in the South Docks. Alone. No guards, no tech, no weapons. You sign over every legal deed to the shipping lines, the real estate portfolio, and your offshore accounts to my estate. You give me everything. In exchange, I let you take your woman and your bastard child and leave the city forever.”
“And if I refuse?”
“Then I send you Evelyn piece by piece,” Dominic sneered. “And once I’m done with her, I’ll come for the little girl. You have twenty-four hours to make your choice, billionaire.”
The line went dead.
Holden slowly placed the phone on the table. The men around the room—seasoned killers who had served the Cross family for decades—looked at their leader, waiting for the command to launch an all-out assault.
Before Holden could speak, the double doors of the war room creaked open.
Standing in the doorway was Lily. She was wearing an oversized white sweater that belonged to Holden, the sleeves rolled up several times to free her hands. Her small feet were tucked into thick wool socks. Phantom walked right behind her, his head pressed close to her side as an escort.
The room of hardened enforcers went completely silent.
“Lily,” Holden said, his tone softening instantly as he stood up from his chair. “What are you doing out of bed? You need to rest.”
Lily rubbed her eyes sleepily, holding a small stuffed bear that Dr. Vance had brought her. “I heard your voice. I was scared.”
Holden walked across the room and knelt in front of her. He didn't care that his men were watching him—the most feared boss in the state—lowering himself to eye level with a child.
“You don't have to be scared anymore, Lily,” Holden said gently, placing a hand on her small shoulder. “You’re safe here. Nobody in the world can hurt you in this house.”
Lily looked at the tactical maps on the screen, then looked back into Holden’s eyes. “Is my mommy with that bad man?”
Holden felt a sharp pang in his heart. He refused to lie to her. “Yes. But I am going to bring her home. I promise you.”
Lily reached out her small hand and touched Holden’s face, her thumb gently tracing the line of his jaw. “Mommy told me stories about you. She said you were strong. She said whenever the world got dark, you were the light that chased the monsters away.”

Tears prickled at the corners of Holden’s eyes—a sensation he hadn't felt since he was a child himself. He wrapped his strong arms around her tiny frame, pulling her close.
“I will bring her back, Lily,” Holden whispered into her hair, his resolve turning into unbreakable steel. “I swear it on my life.”
