Chapter 6 - REUNITED UNDER ONE ROOF

The return to the Cross estate was swift and silent.

By 2:00 AM, the convoy of black SUVs pulled up to the main entrance. Holden carried a exhausted Evelyn into the estate, where Dr. Vance was waiting with a medical team to tend to her injuries.

Upstairs in the master suite, Lily was sitting up in the middle of the large bed, holding her stuffed bear tightly, refusing to go back to sleep until she knew her mother was safe. Phantom trotted into the room first, his tail wagging low as he approached the bed.

“Phantom!” Lily gasped softly, her face lighting up.

Then, the bedroom door opened wider.

Evelyn stepped into the room, wrapped in a soft white robe, her face cleaned and bandaged. The moment her eyes met Lily’s, a sob escaped her throat.

“Mommy!” Lily cried out, throwing off the blankets and sliding off the bed.

Evelyn dropped to her knees on the plush rug as Lily sprinted across the room, throwing her tiny arms around her mother’s neck. They held each other tightly, crying softly, rocking back and forth in the warm glow of the fireplace.

Holden stood in the doorway, leaning against the frame, watching the woman he loved and the daughter he had just discovered finally safe in each other's arms. For the first time in his thirty-six years of life, the cold, empty void in his chest felt completely filled.

After several minutes, Evelyn looked up at Holden. She held out her hand to him.

Holden stepped forward, dropping to his knees beside them. Evelyn reached out and pulled him into their embrace. Lily wrapped her small arm around Holden’s neck, pressing her warm cheek against his.

“We’re together now,” Lily whispered softly. “Just like Mommy promised.”

Later that night, after Lily had finally fallen into a deep, peaceful sleep between them on the king-sized bed, Holden and Evelyn sat together on the balcony overlooking the moonlit estate. The rain had stopped, leaving behind a clear sky filled with bright stars.

Holden handed Evelyn a warm cup of tea, wrapping a thick wool blanket over her shoulders.

“Why didn't you tell me, Evie?” Holden asked gently, his voice filled with quiet pain. “Four years ago... why did you run?”

Evelyn looked down at her tea, her reflection floating on the dark surface. “Four years ago, Holden, your father’s old rivals were trying to assassinate you every week. Your world was filled with bombs, street wars, and endless blood. I discovered I was pregnant right after you survived that car bombing on 5th Avenue.”

She looked up at him, her eyes shining with tears. “I was terrified, Holden. I knew that if the underground found out you had a child, she would become a target for the rest of her life. I wanted to protect her. I thought... I thought if I hid her away in a quiet neighborhood, she could have a normal life.”

Holden reached out, taking her hand in his, caressing her knuckles with his thumb. “And why didn't you ask me to leave the life back then?”

“Because you weren't ready,” Evelyn said softly. “You were obsessed with building your empire, proving to the world that you were better than your grandfather and your father. You had to finish your war first.”

“The war is over now, Evie,” Holden said, his tone resolute and absolute. “Dominic is gone. His family is dismantled. I have complete control over every business I own, and every legal asset is secured in a private trust for Lily.”

He leaned in closer, pressing his forehead against hers. “I spent twelve years building an empire because I thought power was the only thing that could keep me safe. But standing in that courtyard last night, holding our freezing daughter... I realized that an empire is worthless if you have no one to share it with.”

Evelyn smiled softly, leaning into his touch. “So... what happens now, Mr. Cross?”

Holden looked out over his vast estate, then back into her eyes. “Now, I become the man and the father you both deserve.”
