Chapter 6 - The Trap is Set

The rain had cleared by midnight, leaving behind a crisp, starry Chicago night that reflected off the dark waters of Lake Michigan like scattered diamonds. Inside the subterranean command center, massive computer monitors flashed with real-time data feeds, satellite tracking logs, and blueprint schematics of the county courthouse downtown.
Marcus stood beside a large tactical table, sliding three different secure comm-devices across the polished wood toward Vincent and me.
"The trap is set," Marcus reported crisply. "Julian Vance believes his asset—your ex-husband Ryan—is going to walk into Family Courtroom 4B tomorrow at nine AM to secure an emergency custody order. Vance’s enforcement squad will be waiting in the underground parking garage to intercept you the moment you arrive."
I swallowed hard, clutching a cup of cold water. "And what are we going to do?"
Vincent stepped forward, picking up one of the comm-devices and handing it to me. His expression was a mask of absolute, chilling precision.
"We are going to let them think they've won," Vincent said quietly. "We are going to walk right into that courtroom. But instead of an unprepared mother facing a corrupt judge, Ryan and Vance are going to walk into a federal trap orchestrated by the Department of Justice's organized crime division."
I stared at him in utter disbelief. "Federal Justice? Vincent, you're... you're a syndicate boss! Why would the feds work with you?"
Vincent offered a faint, humorless smile. "Every empire has its rivals, Emily. Julian Vance has been stepping on federal toes for years, expanding his drug and weapons trafficking across state lines. My legal team has been trading intelligence with federal prosecutors for six months. All we needed was a smoking gun proving Vance was utilizing civil courts to abduct citizens for criminal leverage."
"And using Ryan as a pawn provided that gun," I realized, the pieces clicking together in my mind.
"Precisely," Vincent nodded. "The moment Ryan signs that perjured affidavit in front of a federal magistrate instead of a corrupt local judge, he becomes an accessory to federal racketeering and child abduction conspiracy. His six-figure payoff from Vance is going to buy him twenty years in a federal penitentiary."
A cold wave of vindication washed over me. Ryan had thought he could discard us, ruin us, and sell our baby for pocket change. Now, his greed was about to become the noose that hanged him.
"What about us?" I asked, looking up into Vincent’s intense eyes. "What happens to Lily and me after tomorrow?"
Vincent’s expression softened, the hard edges of the mafia boss melting away to reveal the man who had picked up a little girl's stuffed rabbit on an airplane.
"After tomorrow, Julian Vance will be behind bars, his network dismantled," Vincent promised, his voice dropping to a tender whisper. "And you will be completely free. No more bodyguards, no more safehouses, no more hunted shadows. You and Lily can walk out into the sun and live the quiet life you deserve."
A familiar, heavy ache squeezed my heart. Free. It was what I had prayed for since the day my marriage fell apart. But looking at Vincent—at the quiet strength he had offered me when my entire world was collapsing—I realized with terrifying clarity that my heart no longer wanted to run away.
"And you?" I whispered, my voice barely audible. "Where will you be?"
May you like
Vincent gently brushed a stray lock of hair away from my forehead, his thumb lingering against my cheek for a fraction of a second.
"I'll be right where I've always been, Emily," he murmured, his gaze holding mine with an intensity that stole my breath. "Guarding the gate."
