Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the System

The first forty-eight hours inside the Moretti estate felt like living in a vacuum. Outside, the lake winds howled against the reinforced glass windows; inside, the silence was broken only by the quiet hum of security monitors and the soft patter of Lily’s little feet as she explored her temporary nursery.
Vincent was barely visible. He spent his days locked in a subterranean command center with Marcus and a team of cyber-security experts, tracing the digital footprints of the people who had sent the threatening text message.
However, he made sure I was never treated like a prisoner. A personal chef prepared meals tailored to Lily’s dietary needs, and a security detail discreetly accompanied me whenever I walked the sprawling interior gardens. But the gilded cage walls were closing in, and my anxiety was reaching a boiling point.
On the third night, unable to sleep, I padded quietly down the hallway in search of the kitchen to warm up a bottle of milk for Lily. The estate was pitch-black except for the security lights casting long shadows across the polished marble floors.
As I passed a set of double doors left slightly ajar at the end of the gallery, I heard a low, tense voice speaking.
"...if Julian Vance is funding the Syndicate splinter cell in New York, we need to cut off his supply lines before he makes a move on the Chicago docks," Vincent’s voice echoed through the crack in the door.
"Boss, we trace the text back to a burner phone registered near O'Hare," Marcus replied. "But Vance is playing a deeper game. He knows you've taken the bait regarding the girl and the baby. Word is already spreading through the underground that Moretti has finally found a soft spot."
I froze, the bottle of milk slipping slightly in my hand. Julian Vance. The name rang a faint bell from the news reports I used to skim over while sitting in my suburban kitchen—a ruthless, corporate-backed cartel leader who operated like a Wall Street executive while running guns across the Great Lakes. And now, because of a fake marriage on an airplane, Julian Vance believed I was Vincent Moretti’s Achilles' heel.
"I don't care what rumors are spreading," Vincent growled, his voice carrying a dangerous, razor-sharp edge. "Double the detail around the nursery. If anyone so much as breathes near Emily or Lily, I want them neutralized before they cross the perimeter fence."
I stepped back into the shadows, my heart hammering against my ribs. I hadn't just stumbled into a mafia dispute; I had walked straight into a blood feud between two titans of the underworld.
"Who's there?"
Vincent’s voice cut through the hallway like a whip. Before I could turn and run back to the suite, the heavy doors swung open. Vincent stood in the doorway, his suit jacket off, his shirtsleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing taut muscles and a scattering of faint scars. His dark eyes locked onto mine instantly.
"Emily," he said, his tone softening immediately as he realized it was me. "What are you doing out of bed? Is Lily okay?"
"She's sleeping," I answered, keeping my voice steady despite the adrenaline pumping through my veins. I looked up at him, unable to hide the frustration and fear that had been building inside me for days. "I heard what you were saying to Marcus. I heard about Julian Vance. Vincent, this isn't just a simple misunderstanding anymore. That man thinks I'm your wife. He's coming for us."
Vincent sighed, running a hand through his dark hair and closing the gap between us. "I know, Emily. And I am handling it."
"Handling it by hiding us in a fortress while you play target practice?" I stepped back, my voice rising. "I left a messy divorce to give my daughter a safe, normal life! I didn't run away from Ryan just to become collateral damage in a war between criminals!"
Vincent flinched as if I had struck him. The raw truth in my words hit him harder than any bullet could have. He looked down at the floor for a long moment before meeting my eyes again.
"You're right," he said quietly. "You didn't ask for any of this. And the moment the digital trail cools down enough to secure a safe transport out of state, I will personally drive you to wherever you want to go. You can start over in California, or Florida, or wherever you choose."
A strange, hollow ache opened up in my chest at his words. California? Freedom? It was everything I had wanted three days ago. So why did the thought of leaving this fortified mansion—and the intense, complex man standing in front of me—feel like a second heartbreak?
Before either of us could speak again, a piercing alarm shrieked through the estate's intercom system.
Marcus burst out of the command room down the hall, his face pale and urgent. "Boss! We have a breach on the west perimeter wall! Motion sensors tripped, and local law enforcement dispatch is calling in an active shooter report near our front gates!"
Vincent’s demeanor shifted from a tired, regretful man back into the apex predator of the underworld in a fraction of a second. He grabbed his holster from the desk behind him, strapping a sleek black firearm across his chest with practiced, terrifying speed.

He looked at me, his eyes burning with absolute resolve.
"Stay in the nursery," Vincent ordered, his voice iron-clad. "Lock the door behind me. No matter what you hear, do not open it for anyone except me."
