Chapter 5 - The Ultimatum

By dawn, the estate had been thoroughly swept by federal-level forensic teams operating under Vincent’s direct payroll. The two intruders had been removed, the shattered balcony door was temporarily sealed with heavy steel plates, and Marcus had reinforced every internal checkpoint in the building.

The attack had been contained, but the message was unmistakably clear: Julian Vance was no longer playing hide-and-seek. He was willing to launch a direct assault on a heavily guarded fortress just to test Vincent’s defenses.

We sat in the grand study overlooking the grey expanse of Lake Michigan. Lily was finally sleeping peacefully in the adjoining room, exhausted by the trauma of the night. Vincent sat behind his massive mahogany desk, nursing a cup of black coffee, looking ten years older than the man I had met on the airplane.

"The attack was a probe," Vincent said, his voice flat and exhausted. "Vance wanted to test our response time. He knows he can't take this estate by force easily, so he's going to try a different approach."

"What approach?" I asked, sitting rigidly on the edge of the leather sofa across from him.

Vincent slid a printed document across the desk. It was an intercepted communication channel decrypted by his cyber team just an hour ago.

I leaned forward and read the words aloud: "Moretti thinks he can hide his new bride behind concrete walls. Let's see how well she holds up when her ex-husband delivers her straight to our front door."

My blood turned to ice water.

"Ryan?" I whispered, my voice trembling. "What does Ryan have to do with this?"

"Vance's associates tracked down your ex-husband in Chicago," Vincent explained grimly. "They approached him yesterday evening, offering him a six-figure payoff and a clean slate if he files an emergency custody petition claiming you are an 'unstable fugitive hiding with a dangerous criminal syndicate'."

The betrayal hit me like a physical blow. Ryan—the man who had abandoned us without a second thought, who had changed the locks and drained our accounts—was now willing to sell our daughter to a mafia syndicate just to line his own pockets.

"He wouldn't," I choked out, tears stinging my eyes. "He doesn't care about Lily! He hasn't asked about her once in three weeks!"

"He doesn't care about the child, Emily. He cares about the money and the revenge," Vincent said, standing up and walking slowly toward the window. "And legally, because your divorce papers were just finalized and custody hasn't been officially adjudicated in family court yet, Ryan still has parental rights. Vance's lawyers are weaponizing the civil court system to force a custody hearing in front of a compromised judge downtown tomorrow morning."

I stood up, my knees shaking so badly I had to grip the back of the sofa for support. "Tomorrow morning? If I go to that courtroom, Vance's men will grab us the second we step outside. If I don't go, a judge will award full custody to Ryan, and he'll hand Lily over straight to the Syndicate."

It was an impossible trap. Checkmate on every side.

Vincent turned around, looking at me with a fierce, unwavering determination that seemed to defy the very laws of physics and crime.

"You're not going to lose your daughter, Emily," he said softly, walking across the room to stand right in front of me.

"How?" I demanded, my voice breaking with desperation. "You heard the report! Vance controls half the local judiciary! If we fight this legally, Ryan wins. If we fight this with guns, we become fugitives on the run forever!"

May you like

Vincent reached out, gently placing his warm hands on my shoulders. His touch sent a jolt of electric comfort through my frayed nerves.

"We don't fight it legally, and we don't run," Vincent said, his eyes burning into mine. "We trap them."
