Chapter 8 - The Verdict

It took the jury less than three hours to reach a unanimous verdict on all counts.
When the foreperson stood to read the charges, the tension in the courtroom was so thick it felt tangible.
“On the first count of conspiracy to commit unlawful child abduction, how do you find the defendant, Doreen Carver?”
“Guilty.”
“On the second count of wire fraud and medical records falsification?”
“Guilty.”
“On the third count of operating an illicit adoption syndicate?”
“Guilty.”
Doreen closed her eyes, the color draining entirely from her face as the heavy reality of her downfall settled over her. She would spend the rest of her golden years behind the gray walls of a federal penitentiary, stripped of her wealth, her social standing, and her illusion of absolute control.
As the court was adjourned, flashbulbs blinded the aisles as reporters clamored for a statement.
Leah walked out of the courthouse doors into the bright spring sunlight, holding her son—now six months old, laughing, and clutching a small wooden star toy—securely in her arms.
Mae and Tom stood beside her, smiling proudly.
A reporter thrust a microphone toward her. “Mrs. Carver! What do you have to say to mothers facing similar institutional corruption?”

Leah paused, looking directly into the camera lens, knowing that thousands of women across the country were watching.
“Trust your instincts,” Leah said clearly. “Never let anyone convince you that your voice doesn't matter. No system, no amount of money, and no amount of fear is stronger than a mother protecting her child.”
