Chapter 6 - The Penthouse Reckoning

With Simone and Dr. Rusk in custody, the conspiracy unraveled with terrifying speed. Warrants were issued for Doreen Carver on charges of conspiracy, fraud, and illegal abduction facilitation.
The final piece of the puzzle remained downtown at the Carver family penthouse.
When the elevator doors opened directly into the penthouse foyer, Leah walked in unannounced. Behind her walked Marcus Vance, two federal agents, and Nathan, who had been picked up cooperating with authorities outside his office building.
Doreen Carver stood by the grand piano, looking as immaculate as ever in a tailored St. John suit, though her eyes blazed with fury as she saw her son brought in by federal officers.
“What is the meaning of this?” Doreen demanded, stepping forward. “Nathan, explain this ridiculous spectacle immediately!”
Nathan couldn't look his mother in the eye. He stared at the floor, his shoulders slumping in defeat. “It’s over, Mom. They have everything. The clinic is closed, Simone is talking, and the federal task force has all the wiretaps.”
Doreen turned her cold, calculating glare onto Leah. A bitter, venomous smile touched the corners of her mouth. “You think you’ve won, you little nobody? You think a court will ever let the wife of a disgraced executive raise a child in peace? You’ll be tied up in litigation for the next twenty years.”
“Not quite, Doreen,” a deep, authoritative voice echoed from the elevator.
Mikhail Volkov—stepping in as an unexpected ally through his corporate philanthropic network that funded independent child protection initiatives—stepped into the foyer alongside local prosecutors.

“The federal courts have already granted Leah full, unchallengeable sole custody,” Mikhail stated calmly, handing a thick sheaf of legal documents to the lead federal agent. “Furthermore, all family assets tied to the Carver estate have been frozen pending a full forensic audit of your illegal adoption network.”
Doreen’s immaculate composure finally fractured. She took a sharp step forward, but the federal agent gently placed handcuffs around her wrists, reading her her Miranda rights.
