Chapter 5 - Showdown at Silver Birch Clinic

The Silver Birch Women’s Center looked peaceful under the afternoon sun, its brick facade gleaming with professional respectability. But behind the locked doors of the administrative wing, panic was beginning to set in.

Dr. Celia Rusk sat at her desk, frantically shredding documents into an industrial cross-cut machine, when the office door swung open.

Leah walked in, flanked by Marcus Vance—the investigative journalist—and two federal agents from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation who had finally been briefed on the extensive trafficking ring.

“Dr. Rusk,” Marcus said, holding up a camera as the shutter clicked. “We’d love a statement regarding the fraudulent psychiatric holds used to generate infants for private adoption rings.”

Dr. Rusk’s face turned the color of ash. She reached for her desk phone, but one of the agents stepped forward, placing a heavy hand on the device.

“Don’t bother, Doctor,” the agent said coldly. “We already have the digital ledger from your private server. Every transaction, every coerced signature, and every payoff from Doreen Carver.”

While the authorities secured the clinic, Leah walked down the sterile hallway toward the recovery rooms. She pushed open the door to a private suite where Simone was lounging on a velvet sofa, scrolling through her phone.

Simone looked up, her expression turning from annoyed to sheer terror as she recognized Leah standing in the doorway with her newborn son securely strapped to her chest.

“You...” Simone gasped, sitting upright. “How did you—?”

“Your little business is finished, Simone,” Leah said, her voice steady and powerful. “The babies you stole, the mothers you manipulated—it’s all over.”

Simone tried to reach for her handbag, but the federal agents filed into the room behind Leah, snapping handcuffs onto the astonished broker before she could utter another word.
