Chapter 6 - The Secret Files

While Nathan fought a silent war in the corporate boardrooms of downtown Chicago, Sarah was slowly regaining her strength at the private recovery clinic tucked away in the pine-draped hills north of the city.

The room was bathed in golden afternoon sunlight, smelling of fresh linen and cut flowers that Nathan had ordered delivered every morning. Sarah sat propped up against a stack of fluffy white pillows, sipping warm broth from a ceramic bowl.

The door opened quietly, and Dr. Vance stepped in, holding a brown manila folder.

"How are you feeling today, Sarah?" Dr. Vance asked, checking her monitor readings with an approving nod. "Your lung capacity has improved by twenty percent over the last forty-eight hours. At this rate, you'll be discharged in a week."

"I feel like I woke up from a nightmare I've been having for five years," Sarah said softly, looking out the large picture window at the snow-dusted trees. "Dr. Vance... Nathan hasn't visited in two days. Is something wrong? Is he in trouble?"

Dr. Vance hesitated, pulling a chair up to the side of the bed. He placed the manila folder on the bedside table. "Nathan is fighting a very dangerous battle on your behalf, Sarah. Arthur Vance—the primary stakeholder in Nathan’s corporation—is using his financial leverage to try and force Nathan to abandon the residential redevelopment cancellation."

Sarah’s heart skipped a beat. "Because of us? Because he helped us?"

"Because Nathan refuses to let them bulldoze your building and throw hundreds of impoverished families onto the street," Dr. Vance explained grimly. "Arthur is ruthless. He’s digging through Nathan’s past, trying to find anything he can use to destroy his reputation or force a hostile takeover of Cole Enterprises."

Sarah looked down at the manila folder. "What's in that folder?"

"Nathan asked me to bring this to you," Dr. Vance said quietly. "It contains copies of the original land titles and zoning documents for your apartment building. Decades ago, before Arthur Vance bought up the district through shell corporations, that building was designated as a community trust fund property meant to house low-income families. Arthur forged the acquisition papers."

Sarah’s eyes widened. "Forged them?"

"Yes," Dr. Vance nodded. "If those original documents are authenticated and submitted to the municipal housing authority, Arthur’s entire legal claim to the property collapses. The building reverts to a protected public trust, and neither Arthur nor anyone else can ever evict you or your neighbors again."

Sarah picked up the folder, her fingers tracing the faded, legalistic seals on the cover. "Where is Nathan now?"

"He called an emergency press conference for tomorrow morning at Cole Enterprises headquarters," Dr. Vance said. "He’s going public with everything."
