Chapter 3 - Dawn and Demands

By 4:00 AM, the dingy apartment had been transformed into a temporary medical triage unit.
Dr. Harrison Vance—a trusted, discreet private physician whom Nathan kept on retainer for high-stakes corporate emergencies—was wrapping a blood pressure cuff around Sarah’s frail arm. Two clinical assistants quietly set up an IV drip, pumping saline and broad-spectrum antibiotics into her dehydrated veins.
Lily sat on the edge of the sofa, wrapped in one of the thick winter blankets Nathan had bought. She held a mug of warm cocoa in both hands, watching the medical staff move with wide, curious eyes. Nathan sat on a wooden stool beside her, resting his elbows on his knees.
"She's suffering from severe bronchial pneumonia compounded by extreme malnutrition and exhaustion," Dr. Vance said quietly, walking over to where Nathan stood. "If she had gone another twenty-four hours without medical intervention, her organs would have begun to shut down. We need to move her to a private recovery clinic in the suburbs by noon."
Nathan nodded, his jaw set. "Arrange the transport. Use the unmarked ambulance. I don't want any paperwork hitting public databases."
"Understood," Dr. Vance replied, packing up his diagnostic kit. "What about the child?"
"She stays with me until her mother is stable," Nathan said without a second's hesitation.
Lily looked up quickly, her expression guarded. "Where's my mom going?"
Nathan crouched down so he was eye-level with the little girl. The harsh overhead light caught the dark circles under her eyes and the faint pinpricks on her tiny fingers. "Your mom is going to a special place where doctors can make her strong again, Lily. You’re going to come with me. We’re going to get some real food, buy you some new clothes, and wait for her to get better."
"I don't know you," Lily whispered, her lower lip trembling.
"That's fair," Nathan replied with a rare, gentle smile that completely transformed his stern features. "My name is Nathan. I own this building. And I promise you... nobody is ever going to make you sew through the night again."
Sarah, watching from her makeshift bed as the IV fluids slowly brought a faint hint of color back to her cheeks, weakly raised a hand. A single tear tracked down her temple. "Thank you," she mouthed silently.

Two hours later, as the first pale rays of dawn broke through the gray Chicago smog, an unmarked medical van pulled away from the curb, carrying Sarah to safety. Lily sat in the leather passenger seat of Nathan’s luxury truck, clutching a stuffed bear Nathan had bought at a gas station stop, while Nathan drove them toward his downtown penthouse.
Little did Nathan know, his sudden intervention in Apartment 4B had just triggered a chain reaction that would awaken sleeping dogs within his own corporate empire—dogs he thought he had buried years ago.
