Chapter 5 - The Corporate Trap

The air in the boardroom grew heavy, thick with a silent, simmering war between two men who viewed the world through entirely different lenses.
Nathan stepped around the conference table, closing the distance between himself and Arthur Vance. "That land is residential. Those people have lived there for decades. We are not bulldozing those tenements."
Arthur chuckled softly, shaking his head as if humoring an unruly child. "Oh, Nathan. You sentimental fool. Do you really think you built this empire on your own? Who do you think funded your first commercial real estate acquisition twelve years ago when you were a nobody lawyer drowning in debt? I did."
Arthur leaned in close, his voice dropping to a harsh, venomous whisper. "And I didn't fund you so you could turn my investments into a charity soup kitchen. The contracts for those residential blocks are already signed. The eviction notices were filed legally under corporate restructuring clauses three months ago. If you try to interfere with our redevelopment plans, I will pull my capital, crash your stock value, and ensure that Sarah and her little girl are thrown out onto the street—permanently."
Nathan’s fists clenched at his sides. The old fury—the blinding, helpless anger of a child watching his world collapse—surged through his chest, but this time, it wasn't paralyzing. It was focused, sharp, and deadly.
"Try it, Arthur," Nathan said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "You forget... I know every loophole, every shell corporation, and every offshore account you used to hide your early capital. If you touch Sarah or Lily, I will burn this entire corporation to the ground and take you down with it."
Arthur’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a flicker of genuine shock. He hadn't expected Nathan to push back with such absolute, fearless resolve.
"We'll see who survives the fire, Nathan," Arthur spat, turning on his heel and marching out of the boardroom, the heavy doors slamming shut behind him.
Richard stood frozen near the door, sweating profusely. "Nathan... what are we going to do? If Arthur pulls his capital, the company will default on its bank loans by the end of the month."
"Then we find new investors," Nathan said calmly, walking back to his desk. "And we start auditing every single file Arthur touched over the last ten years."
As Richard hurried out of the room to execute the emergency directives, Nathan walked over to the private office adjoining his boardroom.
Inside the quiet, sunlit room, Lily sat cross-legged on a large plush rug, coloring with a box of expensive markers Nathan had bought her. She looked up as he entered, her big brown eyes holding a quiet, cautious curiosity.
"Are we going to have to move again?" Lily asked softly, holding up a green crayon.

Nathan walked over, sat down on the floor right beside her, and gently brushed a lock of messy brown hair away from her forehead. A genuine, warm smile broke across his face—the first real smile he had worn in years.
"No, Lily," Nathan said, his voice steady and full of fierce protection. "Nobody is moving anywhere. Your mom is getting better, and we are going to build a brand-new home. One that nobody can ever take away."
