Chapter 7 - The Siege of Lake Michigan

Up in the executive study on the second floor, the red security light on Victor’s encrypted terminal flashed silently.
Victor sat behind his massive mahogany desk, watching the live surveillance feed from the subterranean holding cell on a secondary monitor. He watched Serena hand the burner phone to the corrupt guard. He watched her make the call. He heard every single word of her conversation with Don Salvatore through the hidden bugs he had deliberately left active in her cell.
A cold, mirthless smile touched the corners of Victor’s mouth.
"She took the bait, Boss," Marcus said, stepping out from the shadows near the bookshelf, loading a fresh magazine into his automatic rifle. "Salvatore is taking his elite strike team to the Pier 4 docks on Lake Michigan within the hour. He thinks we're vulnerable."
"He's old, arrogant, and blinded by family pride," Victor said smoothly, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. He reached into his drawer and retrieved a heavy, customized firearm, checking the slide with practiced precision. "He thinks because I gave him a seat at the commission table, I forgot how his father betrayed mine thirty years ago."
Marcus grinned, a fierce, predatory expression. "Shall we wipe them out?"
"Leave nothing standing," Victor ordered coldly. "Secure the perimeter of the mansion first. I want double guards on the nursery floor. If a single leaf falls near Lily and Ethan, heads will roll."
"Understood, Boss. What about Serena?"
"Let her rot in the dark a little longer," Victor replied, walking toward the private elevator. "When I return, the Montigue dynasty will be nothing more than a history lesson in Chicago's underworld textbooks."
Meanwhile, up on the third floor, Lily was putting Ethan to sleep.
The nursery was bathed in the soft, warm glow of a star-patterned nightlight. Ethan was resting peacefully against Lily’s shoulder, his breathing slow and even. Lily stroked his soft hair, her mind racing. She had heard the distant hum of armored vehicles mobilizing outside, and she knew—with the keen intuition of a woman who had spent a week living in the lion's den—that something massive and dangerous was about to happen.
The door clicked open softly.
Lily spun around, her heart jumping into her throat.
It was Victor. He was dressed in tactical black gear over his suit, a heavy holster strapped across his broad chest. The sheer, terrifying aura of a mafia warlord clung to him, yet as his eyes met Lily’s across the dimly lit room, the harsh edges of his face softened noticeably.
"You're leaving," Lily stated quietly, not wanting to wake the baby.
"I have business to attend to at the docks," Victor said, taking a slow step into the nursery. "It might get loud. Stay inside this room. The smart glass on the windows is bulletproof, and Marcus has a detail stationed outside the door."
Lily stood up carefully, transferring sleeping Ethan back to his crib without waking him. She turned to face Victor, her eyes searching his dark, intense features.
"Don't die," she said before she could stop herself.
Victor stopped dead in his tracks. A flicker of genuine surprise crossed his stoic face, followed by a slow, profound warmth that reached all the way to his ice-blue eyes. He stepped closer—close enough that Lily could feel the heat radiating from his broad frame.

"I have too much to come back to," Victor whispered, his gaze dropping to her lips before meeting her eyes once more. "Wait for me, Lily."
Before she could answer, he turned and vanished into the night.
