Chapter 7 - The Morning After

Sunlight washed over the snow-covered gardens of the Blackwell estate, painting the frost in brilliant shades of diamond white.

Kate woke up slowly. For a second, she forgot where she was—she expected to hear the harsh alarm clock of her tiny apartment, the dripping faucet in the kitchen, the phantom weight of bills stacking up on the counter.

Instead, she smelled roasting coffee and fresh cedarwood smoke.

She sat up, wincing slightly as her fiberglass cast shifted against the goose-down duvet. She looked down at her clothes—she was wearing a soft, silk pajama set she had never seen before, left neatly folded on the velvet armchair by the bed.

The door opened softly, and Sarah stepped in carrying a breakfast tray loaded with scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, and a warm mug of tea.

"Good morning, dear," Sarah smiled warmly. "Mr. Blackwell asked me to check on you as soon as you woke up."

"Damon?" Kate asked, her heart fluttering. "Where is he?"

"In his private study on the second floor. He’s been working since dawn. But he left strict instructions: once you finished breakfast, you were to come down and see him."

Twenty minutes later, dressed in a comfortable cashmere sweater Sarah had provided from the estate’s private wardrobe reserves, Kate walked down the grand staircase. The ballroom below was pristine, spotless, as if three hundred corrupt politicians and elite socialites had never stood there drinking champagne just hours before.

She walked down the west corridor, her footsteps silent against the thick Persian runner.

The door to Damon’s private study was ajar. She pushed it open gently.

Damon sat behind a massive mahogany desk stacked with architectural blueprints, financial ledgers, and secure comm-links. He looked up as the door creaked, his dark eyes instantly softening the moment they landed on her face.

He stood up, walking around the desk.

"How is the arm?" he asked, his voice steady and low.

"It hurts," Kate admitted honestly, looking up at him. "But... it’s healing. Damon, I got the call from St. Vincent's an hour ago. They said my mother’s account was paid in full. They moved her to a private room with a view of the garden."

Damon nodded, shoving his hands into his trouser pockets. "Good."

"I don't know how to thank you," Kate whispered, her voice trembling slightly as tears prickled her eyes. "You risked everything—your status, your safety, your entire standing in the city—for a maid you barely knew."

"You weren't just a maid, Kate," Damon said, stepping closer until she could feel the quiet, intense heat of his presence. "You were invisible. And in my world, the people who are invisible are the only ones who see the truth."

He reached out, gently taking her good hand in his, his thumb tracing her knuckles with a tenderness that defied every terrifying rumor ever told about the master of the Blackwell estate.

"You don't work in this house anymore, Kate," Damon said quietly. "Unless you want to. But if you stay... you stay as my equal. My guest. My partner."

Kate stared up at him, the morning sun streaming through the tall stained-glass windows, bathing them both in golden light. The world outside these gates was cold, cruel, and corrupt. But here, inside the walls of the Blackwell mansion, she was safe.

She squeezed his hand back, a small, fierce smile breaking across her face.

"I think," Kate whispered, "I'd like to stay."
