Chapter 2 - The Sound of Whispers in the East Wing

The doctor’s hands were remarkably steady for a man who had just been dragged out of a charity ball at gunpoint—or rather, at the silent, absolute command of Damon Blackwell. His name was Dr. Paul Vance, a trauma surgeon who traded his hospital scrubs for bespoke tailoring twice a week to patch up the elite of Chicago when they played too rough with their private security or their illicit debts.

"This is going to hurt, Kate," Vance murmured, his voice professional and devoid of judgment. He had a metal split-pin ready in his leather kit. "I can give you a local, but it will make you drowsy, and the boss wants you awake when we move you to the private suite downstairs."

"Do it without," Kate whispered, biting her lower lip until she tasted iron again. "I need to stay awake. I need to know..."

"You don't need to know anything," Damon said from the doorway. He hadn't left. He stood with his broad shoulders braced against the doorframe, his dark gaze fixed on the way Paul’s fingers maneuvered around Kate’s shattered radius. "Your only job tonight is breathing and healing. Matteo has already cleared the back staircase. No one from the party will see you."

"The senator's son..." Kate grimaced as the bone was snapped back into alignment with a sickening, muffled pop that made her vision swim with white fire. "He's still down there. Laughing. Drinking your wine."

"For another hour," Damon replied, his voice chillingly flat.

Matteo stepped into the room, his scarred face looking like weathered stone under the harsh overhead bulb. He held out a secure tablet, the screen glowing with high-contrast thermal and security feeds.

"The cars are positioned in the alley behind the service entrance, boss," Matteo reported, keeping his voice low. "Guest logs are fully decrypted. Preston Caldwell arrived with four members of his private detail—former mercenaries from private military contractors out of Virginia. Two more are currently stationed outside the library doors on the second floor, acting as his personal guards while he mingles."

Damon didn't look at the tablet. He looked at Kate, who was now sweating profusely, her breath coming in shallow, shuddering gasps as Paul wrapped her arm in a rigid white fiberglass cast.

"And the other eight?" Damon asked.

"Outside in the motorcade, and two at the perimeter gates," Matteo answered without missing a beat. "Fifteen men total connected to the Caldwell circle inside our security zone tonight."

Kate stared at Damon, the numbers hanging in the cold air of the storage room. Fifteen men. The realization hit her like a physical blow. Damon wasn't just planning to throw Preston Caldwell out of his house. He wasn't planning a lawsuit, or a quiet word with the senator in a back-alley office.

He was waging a war. Inside his own home, while three hundred of Chicago’s wealthiest elites danced beneath crystal chandeliers.

"Damon," Kate whispered, her voice trembling. "If you do this... if you touch a hair on Preston's head, the Caldwell family will bring down the full weight of the federal government. They own the judges, the police commissioner, the state prosecutors—"

"Let them try," Damon interrupted, stepping forward and kneeling beside her chair, ignoring the dust on the floor. His dark eyes locked onto hers with an intensity that burned away her panic, replacing it with a strange, dark certainty. "For eleven months, Kate, you have walked through these halls like a ghost. You cleaned up their spills, you ignored their insults, you endured their filth because you loved your mother enough to swallow your own pride. In this house, my word is the law. Not the senator's. Not the parole board's. Mine."

He reached out, his large, callous-free fingers—hands that had signed death warrants and brokered international syndicates—gently tucking a damp lock of hair behind her ear.

"Paul, move her to the third-floor master suite. Lock the door from the inside. Double the guard on the hallway," Damon ordered, standing up to his full height. "Matteo, come with me. It’s time to say hello to the senator."
