Chapter 7 - The Downfall of the House of Romano

The fallout was catastrophic, swift, and absolute.
Within forty-eight hours, the full might of the Moretti syndicate crashed down upon the Romano family empire like a tidal wave. Federal agencies, tipped off by an anonymous flash drive containing years of illicit money laundering, insider trading, and union corruption, raided the Romano corporate headquarters downtown.
Vivian Romano was arrested live on national television as federal agents slapped steel cuffs around her wrists in the lobby of her Park Avenue penthouse. Her designer heels clicked frantically against the marble as she shrieked obscenities at the cameras, her immaculate makeup streaked with furious tears.
Luca Reed attempted to flee the country on a private charter flight bound for Zurich. But his plane never made it off the tarmac. Marcus and a strike team of enforcers intercepted the aircraft at Teterboro Airport, dragging Luca out of the cockpit before the engines could even spool up.
Back at the Blackwood Estate upstate, the storm had cleared, leaving behind crisp autumn air and quiet dignity.
Rosa sat at the kitchen island, watching the news broadcast on the wall-mounted flat screen as Vivian was led away in handcuffs. The knot of fear that had choked her for eighteen months finally dissolved into nothingness. Miguel’s name was cleared; federal investigators had uncovered the forged safety reports signed by Luca Reed himself, proving her husband had been murdered because he refused to cut corners on the syndicate’s corrupt construction sites.
Lily sat nearby on the floor, coloring in a new picture book while Hopper the stuffed rabbit watched from her lap.
The heavy oak door opened, and Alessandro walked into the kitchen. He removed his leather gloves, placing them on the counter, and poured himself a cup of black coffee.
Rosa looked up at him, her heart swelling with a strange, profound gratitude. "They caught Luca. And Vivian."
Alessandro nodded slowly. He took a sip of his coffee, then turned his gaze toward Lily, who looked up and beamed a bright, toothy smile at him.
Are you staying here forever? Lily signed, her little hands moving with practiced ease.
May you like
Alessandro walked over, kneeling down on the tile floor just as he had done that rainy night on the terrace. He reached out and gently patted Lily’s dark curls.
As long as you and your mother want to stay, Alessandro signed back, his eyes warm and steady. This house is safe now.
