Chapter 6 - The Spider’s Web

By noon, the digital landscape of New York financial markets was shaking.

Inside the sleek, glass-walled boardroom of Romano Global Holdings, Luca Reed sat at the head of the mahogany table, loosening his tie as he addressed the board of directors.

"Effective immediately," Luca announced, projecting an air of absolute confidence, "due to unforeseen medical complications and a necessary psychiatric evaluation, Alessandro Moretti has voluntarily stepped down as head of Moretti Syndicate Holdings. As his primary partner and fiancé to his intended, Vivian Romano, I have been granted full executive proxy over all shipping lanes, real estate portfolios, and financial accounts."

Murmurs rippled through the board members. Several older executives exchanged uneasy glances.

"Where is Mr. Moretti?" asked old Arthur Vance, the longest-serving board member. "We haven't been able to reach him directly, and there's been no official public statement from his security detail."

"He is resting at a private medical facility upstate," Vivian chimed in smoothly, stepping into the boardroom with an aura of untouchable elegance. "His doctors have advised absolute isolation. You can direct all future asset transfers through Luca."

Before Arthur Vance could question further, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with a resounding bang.

Marcus walked in, flanked by four armed Moretti enforcers in full tactical gear.

Luca stood up from his chair, his face flushing with anger. "Marcus? What is the meaning of this? This is a private board meeting!"

Marcus didn't flinch. He walked right up to the head of the table, dropped a thick leather-bound folder onto the polished wood, and slid it toward Luca.

"It's an audit, Luca," Marcus said, his voice cold and steady.

Luca stared at the folder, his hands trembling slightly as he opened it. Inside were certified bank statements, offshore routing numbers, wire transfer receipts signed by his own hand, and digital voice recordings—transcripts of his secret meetings with Vivian planning the corporate coup and the attempted poisoning.

"This... this is fabricated!" Luca stammered, his face turning pale. "Where did you get this?!"

"From the master server at Moretti headquarters," Marcus replied calmly, resting his palms on the table. "Which was accessed this morning by the only man with absolute administrative override codes."

The boardroom doors opened once more.

The heavy footsteps echoed across the marble floor. Every head turned.

Alessandro Moretti walked into the boardroom.

He wore his armor-like black suit, his dark hair combed back precisely, the thin scar across his right eyebrow catching the light from the floor-to-ceiling windows. He looked every bit the king of the underworld, invincible, merciless, and wide awake.

Luca staggered backward, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. "A-Alessandro... you're... you're supposed to be—"

Alessandro stopped at the head of the table, towering over Luca. He didn't speak. He didn't need to.

With slow, terrifying precision, Alessandro raised his right hand and began to sign, his fingers cutting through the air like a blade:

You thought the king was dead, Luca.

Alessandro took one step closer, his dark eyes boring into his former friend’s soul.

Now, watch your empire burn.
