Chapter 20: The Limitless Sky
As the wailing sirens of the police cars echoed from the lobby, taking Arthur away, I returned to my office.
I poured a glass of bourbon—a strong liquor I had never dared to try before—and stepped out onto the 45th-floor balcony. The wind whipped through my hair, carrying the sharp, cold breath of the city.
My phone buzzed. It was my lawyer again.
"Is everything alright, Elena?" she asked.
"More than alright," I replied. "Pulled up by the roots."
I hung up, resting my phone on the railing. The photograph on the wall was still there, reminding me of the day I shattered, only to be reborn. Jackson was in prison. Arthur was ruined. The ghosts of the past, those who thought they could trample over me, had all been reduced to dust beneath my feet.
