Chapter 5 — Five Years Later (Final)
Five years later...
Ashford Manor looked different.
The gates were still impressive.
The gardens were still beautiful.
But the estate no longer represented wealth alone.
Half of the property had been transformed into the Ashford Hope Center, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting children and spouses escaping domestic violence.
Families arrived frightened.
They left believing in tomorrow again.
Arthur officially retired, handing leadership of the family companies to me.
Not because I was his daughter.
Because I had earned his trust.
Lily, now ten years old, stood beside me during the center's grand opening.
She smiled confidently into the crowd.
"I used to think brave people never got scared," she said into the microphone.
"My mommy taught me something different."
"Brave people are the ones who keep protecting others even when they're scared."
The audience rose in a standing ovation.
Later that evening, we visited the small lake behind the estate.
The sunset painted the water gold.
Lily slipped her hand into mine.
"Mom?"
"Yes?"
"Did the bad people lose?"
I looked across the quiet water.
Grant had been convicted of financial fraud and corporate theft after additional investigations uncovered years of illegal activities.
Vanessa was serving her sentence for her role in the scheme.
Neither of them ever contacted us again.
I smiled at my daughter.
"They lost the moment they believed cruelty made them powerful."
She thought about that.
Then she hugged me tightly.
"I like our ending better."
"So do I."
As stars slowly appeared above us, I realized something no amount of money could ever buy.
Companies can be rebuilt.
Fortunes can grow or disappear.
Mansions can be bought and sold.
