Chapter 3 — The Empire Falls

By the time the board meeting began, every executive in Ashford Global had already received the emergency notice.

Mandatory attendance. Immediate effect.

Grant sat at the far end of the polished conference table, his hands clenched beneath it.

Vanessa wasn't allowed inside.

She waited outside the glass doors, pacing nervously.

Arthur Ashford entered without speaking.

Behind him came the company's chief legal officer, the head of security, two forensic accountants, and federal investigators carrying sealed evidence boxes.

Every conversation stopped.

Arthur looked directly at Grant.

"For seven years," he said calmly, "my daughter asked me to trust you."

"I did."

"I believed character mattered more than family wealth."

"I was wrong."

The chief legal officer placed several thick folders in front of every board member.

Inside were hundreds of pages.

Unauthorized transfers.

Personal expenses disguised as corporate investments.

Luxury gifts purchased with company funds.

Private vacations billed to development projects.

Payments made to shell companies secretly owned by Vanessa.

Grant slowly turned pale.

"I can explain—"

"No," Arthur interrupted.

"The evidence already has."

A large screen lit up.

Security footage appeared.

Vanessa entering executive offices after hours.

Grant signing false reimbursement forms.

Private emails discussing how Evelyn would "never notice" the missing money because "everything already belonged to her."

The room fell silent.

One director quietly removed his glasses.

Another simply shook his head.

Arthur finally spoke again.

"Grant Carlisle."

"Effective immediately..."

"You are removed as Chief Executive Officer."

"Your employment is terminated."

"Your access to every Ashford property is revoked."

"Corporate security."

Two uniformed officers stepped forward.

Grant remained frozen.

"You can't do this."

"I built this company."

Arthur looked at him with quiet sadness.

"My daughter gave you an opportunity."

"You confused it with ownership."

Security escorted Grant toward the exit.

Outside the conference room, Vanessa rushed toward him.

"What happened?"

Grant couldn't answer.

At that exact moment...

Both of their phones vibrated.

Bank accounts frozen.

Corporate credit cards canceled.

Vehicle access revoked.

The luxury penthouse where Vanessa had been staying belonged to Ashford Holdings.

The locks had already been changed.

For the first time in years...

Neither of them had anywhere to go.
