Chapter 4 — A Father's Promise

Three months later...

The divorce was finalized.

Grant received nothing beyond the personal belongings he had owned before the marriage.

The prenuptial agreement he had laughed about years earlier had protected every Ashford asset.

Vanessa quietly disappeared from public life after investigators charged her with conspiracy, financial fraud, and identity-related offenses connected to the misuse of company resources.

Meanwhile...

Lily slowly began speaking again.

It started with one word.

"Mom."

The therapists cried.

So did I.

Weeks later, another word came.

"Grandpa."

Arthur smiled through tears as Lily climbed onto his lap.

"I missed you."

He hugged her carefully.

"I'll never be far away again."

The mansion changed completely.

The rooms that had once echoed with fear now filled with music, birthday decorations, bedtime stories, and laughter.

One afternoon, Lily walked into my office carrying crayons.

"Mom?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Can we paint together?"

I smiled.

"Anywhere you want."

She covered an entire canvas with bright colors.

In one corner she painted three small figures holding hands beneath a huge yellow sun.

"Who's that?" I asked.

She pointed proudly.

"You."

"Grandpa."

"And me."

"No monsters anymore."

I pulled her into my arms.

May you like

"No, sweetheart."

"No monsters anymore."
