Chapter 6 - The Council of Shadows

We brought Elena up from the subterranean vault wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, shielding her eyes from the blinding morning light that had finally broken through the storm clouds.

The transition from twelve years of subterranean darkness to the grand hall of the Rossi estate was overwhelming, but Elena’s spirit was unbroken. She sat in the high-backed velvet armchair near the fireplace, holding our newborn son in her arms while Sophia sat quietly on a footstool beside her, gently stroking the baby’s tiny hand.

Matteo was bound securely to a heavy oak chair in the center of the room, his face bruised, his expensive suit ruined, and his arrogant demeanor thoroughly shattered.

"You can't do this, Dante," Matteo snarled, straining against the heavy ropes binding his wrists to the chair. "We're blood! If you hand me over to the Geneva Council, they won't just execute me—they'll erase the entire Rossi name from the syndicate registry!"

I stood near the fireplace, pouring a glass of aged bourbon, my movements deliberate and unhurried. I didn't look at him.

"The Rossi name was already poisoned the moment you decided to lock your sister-in-law in a concrete box and steal my child," I said quietly, taking a slow sip of the amber liquid. "You didn't protect the family, Matteo. You destroyed it for greed. You wanted total control of the European shipping routes, and you figured getting rid of me and Elena was the fastest way to consolidate the assets."

Matteo glared at me, his chest heaving. "And what about Valentina? Are you just going to let your precious wife walk away after helping me?"

"Valentina is currently on a private jet bound for an isolated estate in South America," I replied smoothly. "Her assets have been frozen, her title stripped, and she will spend the rest of her life living in golden exile with armed guards ensuring she never sets foot in Europe again. That's merciful compared to what you deserve."

Before Matteo could reply, the heavy front doors of the mansion swung open with a resounding thud.

Three men in tailored black suits stepped into the grand hall. They weren't ordinary guards. They wore silver lapel pins stamped with the crest of the European Syndicate Directorate—the supreme oversight council that ruled every criminal enterprise from Rome to Marseille.

Leading them was Viktor Vance, the aging, formidable chairman of the council, a man whose word carried the weight of death across half the continent.

Viktor stepped into the hall, his sharp eyes scanning the room—taking in Elena holding the baby, Sophia sitting quietly by her side, Matteo bound to the chair, and me standing by the fireplace.

"Dante Rossi," Viktor greeted, his voice deep and gravelly. "Word travels fast when the European banking networks freeze three billion euros in unverified corporate transfers overnight. We received your emergency council beacon."

"Viktor," I acknowledged, nodding respectfully. "Thank you for coming on such short notice."

Viktor walked slowly toward the center of the room, stopping a few feet away from Matteo. He looked down at my brother with undisguised contempt.

"Matteo Rossi," Viktor murmured, shaking his head. "Stealing from the syndicate coffers, staging unauthorized executions of internal family members, and fracturing the leadership council from within. The penalty for treason against the Directorate is absolute."

Matteo flinched, finally realizing that his empire of lies had collapsed completely. "Viktor, wait! Dante is letting personal family drama dictate syndicate policy! We can negotiate—"

"There is nothing to negotiate," Viktor interrupted coldly, raising his hand.

Two council enforcers stepped forward, placing heavy silver cuffs stamped with the Directorate seal onto Matteo’s wrists.

"Matteo Rossi, you are hereby stripped of all titles, assets, and executive privileges," Viktor announced formally. "You will be transferred to the Directorate Tribunal facility in Zurich for permanent penal servitude. Your name is stricken from the Rossi lineage."

Matteo didn't scream. He didn't fight back. As the enforcers dragged him toward the massive front doors, his head hung low, swallowed entirely by the shadows he had spent a lifetime creating.
