Chapter 4 - Blood and Betrayal

The years I spent running the syndicate’s enforcement divisions weren't just for show. Muscle memory, honed by a decade of operational combat, took over before conscious thought could intervene.

As Matteo lunged at me, I pivoted sharply, using the momentum of his own charge against him. I brought the butt of my sidearm down hard across his shoulder blade, sending him crashing face-first into the carved oak banister of the grand staircase.

Wood splintered. Matteo grunted, tumbling sideways onto the bottom steps, blood splitting his lip.

"Hold him!" I roared at the guards.

Four armed men rushed forward instantly, pinning Matteo’s arms behind his back and forcing him to his knees on the marble stairs. He thrashed like a caged animal, glaring up at me with venomous hatred.

"You think you've won, Dante?" Matteo laughed, blood dripping from his chin onto his white collar. "You think you're the master of this house? Look around! Half the guards in this room report directly to my payroll, not yours!"

I didn't blink. I raised my hand, and instantly, two of the guards standing nearest to Matteo pressed the cold steel of their silenced pistols against the back of his neck.

"Try giving an order, brother," I said quietly. "Let's see whose payroll they're on when their brains are painted across the steps."

Matteo’s defiant smirk vanished. He swallowed hard, his eyes dropping to the floor.

I turned my attention to Valentina, who was still huddled against the wall, shaking uncontrollably. I walked over and knelt down beside her, keeping the baby cradled safely against my chest.

"Valentina," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "You have one chance. Tell me where Elena is, or I hand you and my brother over to the Geneva Syndicate Council. You know what they do to traitors who compromise internal stability. They don't use bullets. They bury you alive in the Mediterranean shipping containers."

Valentina looked up at me, her eyes wild with absolute terror. She grabbed my sleeve with manicured fingers that left white streaks on my jacket.

"She’s in the subterranean vault," Valentina sobbed, the words tumbling out in a panicked rush. "The old bomb shelter beneath the east gardens! Matteo... Matteo kept her down there. He said if we killed her outright, you would investigate the medical examiners. So he staged her death, forged the death certificates, and kept her alive as leverage over the estate's corporate holdings!"

My stomach churned. The woman I had loved—the mother of my first child—had spent twelve years breathing stale air in a concrete box beneath our feet, while I sat upstairs sharing whiskey and cigars with the monster who put her there.

"And the baby?" I asked, my voice cracking slightly. "Whose child is this?"

Valentina swallowed hard, her eyes shifting toward Matteo.

"He's yours, Dante," she whispered.

The hall seemed to spin on its axis.

"What did you say?"

"He’s yours," Valentina wept openly now. "Elena... she conceived him a year ago during one of Matteo’s sick, calculated visits to break her spirit. Matteo wanted to prove he owned everything—even her body. But Elena managed to smuggle the baby out of the bunker three days ago using the old drainage tunnels. She gave him to Sophia to save his life."

I looked down at the tiny infant in my arms.

He wasn't Matteo's son. He was mine. My second-chance son, born in hell, smuggled out by an eight-year-old girl, and dropped like trash into a shed by a brother who thought he had buried every secret forever.

I stood up slowly, handing the baby gently into Sophia’s small, trembling arms.

"Hold him, Sophia," I instructed softly. "Keep him safe. If anyone moves toward you, you run out the front doors to the security vehicle."

The little girl nodded fiercely, cradling the infant against her chest with a maturity far beyond her years.

I turned back toward Matteo, rolling my shoulders as I unbuttoned my suit jacket and tossed it onto the sofa.

"Take him down to the vault," I told the guards. "And bring the heavy bolt cutters. It's time to let the ghost out of the dark."
