Chapter 1 - The Shattered Gala

The silence in the Carver ballroom was absolute, heavy with the scent of expensive perfume, champagne, and the sudden, metallic tang of fear.

Daniel Carver did not look at his fiancée, Claire Whitlock, nor did he look at the forty prestigious guests who had just watched a pregnant housekeeper get her hair sheared like a sheep. His entire universe had shrunk to the shivering woman cradled in his arms. The charcoal wool of his jacket, still holding his body warmth, draped over Hannah's shoulders, a stark contrast to her faded, coarse uniform.

"Daniel, what on earth are you doing?" Claire’s voice rose, shrill and sharp, cracking the polished veneer of the evening. "She’s just the help! She was caught snooping in the private study. I was simply teaching her a lesson in boundaries. You can't possibly—"

"Silence," Daniel said.

He didn't yell. He didn't have to. The single word was delivered with a quiet, lethal finality that made Claire step back, her high heels clicking sharply against the marble. Daniel gently slipped one arm under Hannah’s knees and the other behind her back, lifting her effortlessly into his arms.

Hannah gasped, her hand clutching his shirt collar. Another wave of pain—a sharp, squeezing contraction—rippled through her lower abdomen. She leaned her forehead against his chest, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps.

"Daniel!" Claire’s mother, Evelyn Whitlock, stepped forward, her face twisted in outrage. "This is your engagement party! You cannot humiliate Claire like this for a servant!"

Daniel stopped at the base of the grand staircase. He turned his head slowly, his dark eyes sweeping over the crowd of Providence’s elite. "The engagement is off," he announced, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "And if anyone in this room speaks a word of what happened tonight to the press, I will personally ensure your businesses, your assets, and your reputations are dismantled by sunrise. Get out of my house."

Without waiting for the inevitable uproar, Daniel carried Hannah up the stairs.

Behind him, the ballroom erupted into a chaotic symphony of whispers, gasps, and Claire’s hysterical tears. But Daniel didn't look back. He ran up the stairs, his heart hammering against Hannah’s cheek. He felt her trembling, felt the tight, hard knot of her stomach beneath his hand.

"Hold on, Hannah," he muttered, his voice thick with a raw emotion she had never heard from the stoic billionaire before. "Just hold on."
