Chapter 8 - The Price of Loyalty

Before the intruder could pull the trigger, a dark shadow erupted from the hallway behind him.
Adrien Vance—bruised, bleeding from a cut above his eye, his tailored suit ripped at the shoulder—slammed into the operative’s back. The two men hit the floor in a violent tangle of limbs and suppressed fury.
The firearm skittered across the polished tile, sliding under the kitchen table near Lily’s feet.
The operative, larger and trained in close-quarters combat, managed to flip Adrien over, pinning the billionaire to the floor and raising a heavy tactical combat knife. “You should have stayed in the boardroom, Vance!”
Cora didn't hesitate. She grabbed a boiling pot of water off the back burner—the water she had been using to make tea for Lily—and marched right up behind the pinned operative.
“Get away from him!” Cora roared, and emptied the steaming pot directly across the intruder’s back.
The man shrieked in agonizing pain, collapsing off Adrien as he writhed on the floor.
Adrien scrambled up, chest heaving, his gray eyes burning with adrenaline. He kicked the tactical knife away and pinned the screaming operative to the ground with a knee to his chest, pressing down until the man went limp from shock and pain.
For a long moment, the only sound in the kitchen was the hum of the emergency generator and their heavy breathing.
Adrien slowly stood up, wiping blood from his forehead. He looked down at Cora—his seventy-two-year-old cook, who was standing beside him with an empty pot, her apron splattered with flour and chaos, breathing just as hard as he was.
Then, Adrien looked past her.
Lily was standing by the table, safe, her small blue eyes shining with unshed tears. She ran past the downed intruders, past the overturned chairs, and threw herself straight into Adrien’s arms.
Adrien dropped to his knees, burying his face in his daughter’s hair, wrapping his arms around her with a fierce, unbreakable grip.
“I’ve got you,” Adrien whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “I’ve got you, Lily. You’re safe.”

Cora stood quietly nearby, wiping her hands on her apron, a quiet tear slipping down her wrinkled cheek.
Ten minutes later, the wail of police sirens and federal FBI cruisers echoed across the Greenwich snow, flooding the estate with flashing red and blue lights. The corporate hack had been traced, Marcus Vance had been exposed as the mastermind who leaked the family vulnerabilities to orchestrate the board coup, and federal marshals were securing the perimeter.
