Chapter 7 - The Cook’s Defiance

Down in the kitchen, the emergency lights buzzed loudly. Lily whimpered, hiding under the wooden table, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
Cora Bennett’s heart raced like a caged bird, but seventy-two years of life had taught her one fundamental truth: when predators came for the young, you didn't run—you fought with whatever you had.
Heavy boots echoed down the stone corridor outside the kitchen door. The handle jiggled.
Cora didn't wait. She grabbed a massive, cast-iron skillet off the stove—heavy enough to crush bone—and flattened herself against the wall right beside the swinging door.
The door swung open slowly. A masked operative stepped into the kitchen, his tactical flashlight sweeping across the empty counters.
“Clear,” the operative muttered into his comms unit.
He took two steps forward, looking toward the pantry.
That was his mistake.
With a battle cry that shook the kitchen walls, Cora swung the heavy cast-iron skillet with every ounce of strength she possessed. The metal connected with the side of the operative’s helmet with a sickening CLANG.
The intruder dropped like a stone, collapsing onto the checkered floor, completely unconscious.
Lily poked her head out from under the table, her eyes wide with absolute awe. “Miss Cora... you’re a superhero.”
Cora dropped the skillet, her breathing heavy, her hands shaking. But there was no time to celebrate. She grabbed Lily’s small hand, pulling her out from under the table. “We need to move, sweetheart. Right now.”
Before they could reach the back pantry exit, the kitchen door swung wide open again.

A second operative stood in the doorway, holding a firearm, his eyes narrowing as he looked down at his unconscious partner and then straight at the seventy-two-year-old cook and the terrified little girl.
“End of the line, grandma,” the operative sneered, raising his weapon.
