Chapter 8 - Eleanor's Ultimatum

By noon, the full weight of the financial collapse hit the family.
My mother, Eleanor, arrived at my house in her leased Lexus, driving recklessly up the driveway. She burst through the front door without knocking, her face contorted in a terrifying mix of rage and panic.
"Sarah Marie!" Eleanor roared, using my full name as if I were a child. "What have you done to your sister?! She is at home hysterically packing her bags, Greg is threatening to sue everyone, and my lease payment was rejected this morning!"
Mark came out of the kitchen, trying to intervene. "Mom, please, calm down—"
"Shut up, Mark!" Eleanor snapped, waving him away like a bug. She turned back to me, pointing an angry, manicured finger at my chest. "You listen to me, Sarah! You will unlock those accounts right now! You will apologize to Greg, you will pay off Chloe's debt, and you will stop this childish temper tantrum! I raised you to be better than this!"
I stood there, watching this woman who had given birth to me, searching her face for any trace of maternal love. There was none. There was only greed, control, and the desperate panic of an enabler losing her power.
"You didn't raise me, Eleanor," I said softly. "The Marine Corps raised me. They taught me honor, courage, and commitment. Concepts you know nothing about."
"How dare you!" Eleanor gasped. "After everything I sacrificed for you!"
"You sacrificed nothing!" I finally shouted, my voice cutting through the house like a whip. "When I was deployed in Iraq, bleeding in a field hospital, you didn't come visit me because it was 'too stressful'! When I came home with PTSD, you told me to stop being dramatic because it ruined your dinner parties! You only cared about me when I started writing checks!"
Eleanor recoiled, stunned by the raw power of my voice.
"I funded your life out of guilt because I thought a good daughter was supposed to take care of her mother," I continued, stepping toward her until she was forced to step back onto the porch. "But you aren't a mother, Eleanor. You are a parasite. And the host is dead."
"If you do this..." Eleanor stammered, her voice trembling with genuine fear for the first time in her life, "you will never be welcome in my house again. You will have no family!"
May you like
"Look around you, Eleanor," I said, pointing to Leo and Mia, who were standing at the top of the stairs, watching with proud, steady eyes. "I have my family. And you are no longer part of it."
I closed the heavy front door in her face and locked the deadbolt.
