Chapter 3 - The Broken Vow

Mark finally stood up from the table. His face was pale, his eyes darting nervously between my mother, my sister, and me.

"Sarah, please," Mark whispered, taking a step toward me, his hand outstretched in a placating gesture. "Let's not do this here. Not in front of everyone. Let's just go home, cool off, and talk about this privately."

I turned my gaze to my husband. The disappointment in my chest was heavier than any armor I had ever worn in combat.

"Where were you, Mark?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm.

"What?" he stammered.

"Where were you when Greg had his knee in your son's back?" I stepped closer to him. "Where were you when Greg knocked your nine-year-old daughter into the dirt? You were sitting right here. Watching. Waiting for someone else to fix it."

"Sarah, Greg was just being rowdy, I didn't think—"

"You didn't want to make a scene," I finished the sentence for him, the bitterness dripping from every word. "You cared more about avoiding an uncomfortable conversation at a cookout than protecting your own blood. You let your wife fight your battles while you sat on the sidelines."

"That's not fair!" Mark snapped, his face flushing with sudden shame. "I'm trying to keep the peace!"

"Peace without justice isn't peace, Mark. It's surrender," I said firmly.

I walked over to Mia, kneeling down beside her. I picked up my handkerchief, gently wiped the dirt and blood from her small knee, and lifted her into my arms. I turned to Leo, who was standing tall now, his chin up, staring at his father with an expression that broke my heart—a boy realizing his hero wasn't the man sitting at the table.

"Leo, gather your things," I said softly. "We're leaving."

"Sarah, stop!" Eleanor commanded, her voice shrill with authority. "If you walk out that gate right now, you are turning your back on this family! You are destroying this holiday!"

I paused at the wooden gate, holding Mia close, with Leo standing firmly by my side. I looked back at the group standing on the lawn: Greg holding his wrist, Chloe fuming with humiliation, Eleanor trembling with rage, and Mark standing alone in the middle of the grass, looking smaller than he ever had in his life.

"The family was already destroyed," I said, looking straight at my mother. "You just didn't notice because I was the one holding up the walls. And as of today, I quit."

I pushed open the gate and walked out, leaving the backyard in absolute ruin.
