Chapter 7 - The Unraveling of Greg

Chloe gasped, stepping back as if I had slapped her. "You can't do this! Mom is going to disown you! We are family!"

"Family doesn't leech off a woman for a decade while insulting her career," I said, stepping closer to her. "Greg liked to call me the 'paperwork division,' didn't he? Well, he was right about one thing—I am very, very good at paperwork."

I reached into my side table and pulled out a thick Manila folder, tossing it onto the entry table in front of her.

"What is this?" Chloe asked suspiciously.

"That is a complete financial audit of your husband's business expenses over the past three years," I explained. "When I set up that credit line, I required monthly expense receipts. Do you know what Greg was using my money for, Chloe? It wasn't building supplies."

Chloe’s hands began to shake as she opened the folder.

"Page four shows three luxury hotel bookings in Miami," I recited from memory. "Page seven shows transactions at a high-end jewelry store in Atlanta—items you've never owned. And page twelve shows a recurring monthly transfer to an account registered under the name of a young woman who works at his gym."

Chloe’s face turned from red to ash white. She stared at the bank statements, the timestamps, and the location tags printed clearly in black and white.

"No... no, Greg said these were client dinners..." Chloe whispered, her voice cracking.

"Greg lied to you," I said gently, offering no pity. "Just like he lied about his military record. He claimed he was a Special Forces instructor, right? I ran his service records through my contacts at Veterans Affairs last night. Greg was discharged after fourteen months for failing physical fitness tests and misconduct. He never stepped foot overseas."

Chloe dropped the folder, the papers scattering across the hardwood floor.

Outside on the driveway, Greg tapped his horn impatiently, wondering why his wife was taking so long to demand the money. He sat in his truck, wearing his fake neck brace, entirely unaware that his entire life was collapsing inside my hallway.

Chloe looked up at me, tears streaming down her face, her arrogance completely shattered. "Sarah... please... tell me this isn't true."

"You built your life on a bully's lies, Chloe," I said quietly. "Now you have to live with the house falling down."
