Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

Two weeks later.

The morning sun filtered brightly through the towering stained-glass windows of the Pinecrest Memorial Hospital.

I walked down the quiet fourth-floor hallway, holding Charlee’s small hand in mine. She was wearing a clean navy-blue dress and white shoes, holding a large bouquet of fresh yellow sunflowers—her grandmother's favorite flower.

In my arms, I held baby Dexter, who was sleeping peacefully wrapped in a soft blue knitted blanket.

We reached Room 412. The door was slightly ajar.

Inside, sitting in a wheelchair beside the window, was an elderly woman with silver hair pulled back into a neat bun. Her face was lined with deep wrinkles, but her dark eyes were sharp and gentle.

Florence Knox.

Charlee gasped, her grip on my hand loosening as tears filled her eyes.

"Grandma...?" Charlee whispered.

Florence turned her wheelchair around slowly. When her eyes landed on Charlee, her face transformed into a look of indescribable joy and emotional relief.

"Charlee!" Florence cried out, her raspy voice cracking as she opened her arms wide.

Charlee ran across the room, throwing her arms around her grandmother’s neck, burying her face in Florence’s shoulder. Both of them wept openly, holding each other as if time itself had stopped.

"Oh, my sweet girl... my brave little girl..." Florence wept, kissing Charlee’s hair repeatedly. "I was so worried... I thought I lost you when I fell sick..."

"I found him, Grandma!" Charlee sobbed, pointing back at me and Dexter. "I found Spencer! And I saved baby Dexter just like you told me to always help people!"

Florence wiped her tears and looked up at me.

I walked slowly into the room, setting the sunflowers on the bedside table before sitting down in the chair beside Florence.

"Florence," I said softly, my voice filled with emotion. "I'm Spencer."

Florence looked at my face, her trembling hand reaching out to touch my cheek. Tears rolled down her aged cheeks.

"You look so much like your father, Spencer," Florence whispered. "Arthur had those same honest eyes."

"I read my father's private journal two weeks ago," I said gently. "I know everything, Florence. I know my father didn't fire you. He paid you to leave because he was trying to protect you and Clara from Victoria."

Florence closed her eyes, letting out a long, heavy sigh. "Victoria was ruthless, Spencer. Thirty years ago, when she found out I was pregnant with Clara, she threatened to ruin Arthur's company and destroy my life. Your father gave me fifty thousand dollars and told me to hide in Oregon under a fake name. He sent monthly support checks through an offshore trust until the day he died."

Florence looked at Charlee, stroking her granddaughter's hair. "Clara grew up never knowing her father's real name. But before Clara died four years ago, I promised her that one day, Charlee would know her real family."

"Charlee will never have to hide again, Florence," I vowed firmly. "I'm legally adopting Charlee as my daughter and niece. And as soon as you are discharged from this hospital, you are moving into the east wing of the Pinecrest Estate. You will never want for anything again."

Florence covered her mouth, crying tears of profound relief. "Oh, Spencer... thank you... thank you..."

At that moment, the door pushed open gently.

Jocelyn Cooper walked into the room. She was wearing a simple beige coat, her color fully returned, looking healthy and strong.

"Jocelyn," I smiled, standing up.

Jocelyn walked over to us, her eyes instantly dropping to the sleeping baby in my arms.

I gently transferred baby Dexter into Jocelyn’s arms. She held her son close against her heart, closing her eyes and weeping silently as she kissed his cheek.

"Thank you, Spencer," Jocelyn whispered, looking at Charlee and then at me. "Thank you for saving my life... and for protecting our son."

Charlee walked over to Jocelyn, gently patting baby Dexter’s tiny head. "He likes his name Dexter, right?"

Jocelyn laughed warmly, wiping a tear. "He loves it, Charlee. And you will always be his hero."
