Chapter 7 - The Winter Ball

Spring arrived early in Providence, melting the thick snow into soft green grass across the estate’s sprawling grounds.

To celebrate the victory over the Chicago and Naples factions, and to solidify the new trade agreements across the eastern ports, Allessandro hosted the annual Romano Spring Ball — the most prestigious, exclusive event in Rhode Island society.

The grand ballroom of the mansion was transformed into an enchanted garden. Crystal chandeliers gleamed overhead, pouring brilliant gold light down upon hundreds of guests — politicians, foreign diplomats, shipping magnates, and high-ranking syndicate leaders from across the country.

Music from a full orchestra drifted through the air, accompanied by the clinking of champagne glasses and laughter.

Standing at the top of the grand marble staircase, Allessandro looked down at the crowd. He wore a flawless black tuxedo, his dark hair neatly styled, looking every bit the sovereign ruler of the city.

Beside him stood Marco, holding two glasses of wine. "Quite a turnout, boss. Even the Governor sent his deputy."

"Let them drink," Allessandro said quietly. "It keeps them satisfied."

His dark eyes, however, were not watching the politicians or the mob bosses. He was looking toward the private family wing at the side of the ballroom.

The double doors opened.

Maria Rossi stepped out onto the balcony at the top of the staircase.

A collective hush seemed to fall over those nearby who turned to look. She wore a floor-length gown of deep midnight-blue velvet, tailored to perfection, hugging her graceful waist before cascading down in soft folds. Around her neck was a delicate diamond necklace — a gift Allessandro had ordered from Paris three weeks prior. Her dark, wavy hair was swept up into an elegant arrangement, revealing her slender throat and radiant, glowing skin.

Beside her stood Emma, looking like a little princess in a matching dress of pale blue silk, her hair tied with a dark velvet ribbon. She held her cloth doll, Rosie, who had been fitted with a tiny matching blue dress made by the mansion's seamstress.

Allessandro turned toward them.

He walked across the marble landing, stopping directly in front of Maria. He held out his hand to her.

"You look breathtaking, Maria," Allessandro said, his voice low and full of an intense, quiet reverence that made her heart skip a beat.

Maria looked up into his eyes, her cheeks flushing with a delicate pink blush. "I... I was so nervous, Allessandro. I have never been to something like this..."

"You belong here," Allessandro declared softly. "More than anyone else in this room."

He offered his arm to her, while reaching his other hand down to Emma. "Shall we go down?"

Emma beamed, taking his large hand with complete trust. "Can we dance, Mr. Allessandro?"

"We shall dance as much as you like, little one," he smiled.

As the three of them descended the grand staircase together — the powerful mafia boss, the former cleaning woman, and the six-year-old child who had saved his life — the entire ballroom turned to watch.

There were whispers among the old socialites and subtle nods of deep respect from the syndicate captains. Everyone in that room understood the silent, unbreakable statement Allessandro Romano was making to the world.

These were not his servants. These were not his guests.

This was his family.
