Chapter 4 - The Shadows of Naples

Three months passed. Winter settled over Federal Hill, coating the slate roofs and stone mansions of the Romano territory in a thick layer of pristine white snow.
The estate had changed. The cold, austere quietness that had defined the house for a decade was broken by the sound of light footsteps and laughter. The second-floor corner suite had been completely renovated into a beautiful, warm living space for Maria and Emma, filled with fresh flowers, soft rugs, and shelves of new books.
Maria had taken over the management of the domestic staff, not as a servant, but as the house administrator. Dressed in elegant wool dresses provided by Allessandro, she moved through the mansion with a quiet grace that earned the immediate respect of every worker and bodyguard in the Romano empire.
Yet, deep within the shadows of the underworld, the removal of the Vance family had created a power vacuum that the Chicago syndicate was eager to exploit.
In a dark, smoke-filled room in downtown Naples, Italy, Don Carmine Moretti sat at a polished mahogany table, listening to a report from his chief lieutenant, a scarred man named Franco.
"Allessandro Romano has completely taken over the Vance banking lines in Providence," Franco reported in thick Italian. "The poison plot failed. Julian Vance signed over his entire fortune and fled to South America with his daughter."
Don Carmine, a man in his sixties with iron-gray hair and eyes like flint, slammed his fist onto the table. "How did a girl like Isabella fail?! Allessandro was supposed to be dead two months ago!"
"It was a child, Don Carmine," Franco said quietly. "A servant's six-year-old daughter saw Isabella preparing the thallium and warned Romano."
Carmine’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure malice. "A servant's child? Allessandro Romano's empire was saved by a maid's brat?"
"Yes, Don. And now, sources say Allessandro has taken this child and her mother into his own home. He treats them like blood. He bought the girl a gold heirloom watch and enrolled her in the most expensive private school in Rhode Island."
A slow, vicious smile spread across Carmine Moretti's face. "Is that so? Allessandro the untouchable... Allessandro the cold king... he finally has a soft spot."
Carmine stood up, walking toward a large map of the United States pinned to the wall. He placed his thick thumb directly over the city of Providence.
"For ten years, we could not touch Allessandro because he cared for nothing," Carmine murmured, his voice dripping with venom. "He had no wife, no children, no heart to pierce. But now... now he has given us a target."

"What are your orders, Don Carmine?" Franco asked.
"Send three of our best men to Providence," Carmine commanded. "Do not touch Allessandro. Do not touch his docks. Bring me the child and her mother. Once we have them in Naples, Allessandro Romano will hand over the entire eastern port network on his knees."
