Chapter 8: The Matriarch's True Face

Christopher held Emma tightly against his chest, his body still tense as he stared at his mother on the veranda. The rain continued to fall, but the sudden violence had brought a terrifying stillness to the courtyard.

Juliette was on the grass, clutching her bleeding shoulder, groaning in agony. Over the western wall, the sound of a car engine roaring echoed as Marcus Vance, seeing his sister get shot, slammed his foot on the gas and sped away into the night, abandoning her without a second thought.

"Marcus... wait... don't leave me," Juliette whimpered, reaching a trembling hand toward the wall, but her brother was already gone.

Christopher stood up, lifting Emma into his arms. The little girl was crying softly, her head buried in his neck. He walked slowly toward the veranda, his eyes locked on his mother, Estelle, who was casually reloading the rifle as if she had just finished a casual day of sport shooting.

"You shot her," Christopher said, his voice flat, devoid of any gratitude. He knew his mother hadn't done it to save Emma. She had done it to protect her own interests.

Estelle handed the rifle to a terrified young security guard who had finally run out from the main building. "Of course I shot her, Christopher. She was a liability. She was loud, she was stupid, and she was about to give away a four-hundred-million-dollar asset to a street criminal."

She walked down the steps of the veranda, her silk gown dragging through the wet grass, completely unbothered by the rain. She stopped five feet from Christopher, her eyes dropping to the small gold microchip still clutched in his hand.

"Hand it over, son," Estelle said, her voice turning into that familiar, commanding tone that had ruled the family for decades. "The chip belongs in the family vault. With Julian Monroe holding the ledger and Juliette neutralized, we can use that key to liquidate the Swiss accounts before the international courts can freeze them. We can save the Pierce Group."

Christopher let out a cold, bitter laugh. "Save the Pierce Group? You mean save your lifestyle, Mother. You don't care about this family. You don't care about me, and you certainly don't care about Emma."

"I care about survival!" Estelle snapped, her eyes flashing with anger. "Your father was weak at the end. He let his guilt destroy his mind. He wanted to give everything to this... this child of a nobody. If I hadn't stepped in, if I hadn't guided Juliette to do the dirty work, we would already be broke!"

"So you admitted it," Christopher said, his voice deadly quiet. "You were the one who told Juliette to make sure Emma had an 'accident' at the pool. Yvette’s recording wasn't a misunderstanding. It was a murder plot."

Estelle didn't deny it. She crossed her arms, looking at Emma with total indifference. "A necessary correction, Christopher. The fortune belongs to the people who can manage it. Now, give me the chip. Don't make me ask you again. Thomas is already at the gates with Julian. We have a deal to finalize."

"Thomas is unconscious on the driveway," Christopher said, stepping past her toward the mansion. "And the deal is off."

"Christopher!" Estelle yelled, turning around to follow him. "If you don't give me that chip, I will ruin you! I will tell the board you are mentally unstable. I will take this child away from you through the family courts! You think you can fight me? I am Estelle Pierce! I built this city's high society!"

Christopher stopped at the glass doors of the mansion. He turned back to look at his mother, his face silhouetted by the warm lights of the interior.

"You didn't build anything, Mother. You stole it," Christopher said clearly. "And as for the family courts? You might want to check the driveway. The people arriving aren't your lawyers."

A sudden chorus of sirens echoed through the valley. Blue and red lights began flashing through the heavy trees at the front entrance of the estate. Four, six, eight police cruisers burst through the grand iron gates, followed by two black SUVs with federal government plates.

Arthur Vance, the family attorney, stepped out of the mansion behind Christopher, holding a tablet. "The FBI has arrived, Madame Estelle. And they have the full audio recording from the pool cabana, along with the digital forensic trail of the forty-million-dollar transfer you authorized through Juliette's account."

Estelle's face finally cracked. The regal confidence vanished, replaced by a sudden, old look of pure terror. "No... no, that's impossible. I didn't authorize anything directly!"

"You used your personal laptop, Mother," Christopher said, holding up the gold chip one last time before dropping it securely into his inner pocket. "The one connected to the house Wi-Fi. Yvette didn't just record your voice. She recorded your IP logs. Goodbye, Mother."

As the federal agents swarmed the courtyard, arresting a screaming Estelle and a bleeding Juliette, Christopher turned his back on the chaos. He carried Emma up the grand staircase, away from the screaming and the flashing lights, into the quiet safety of her bedroom.

But as he tucked her into bed, his phone buzzed one more time. It was a text message from Julian Monroe, who had somehow escaped before the police arrived at the gates.

The text read: “You think the police can save you, Christopher? Look out the window. The real owner of the four hundred million has just arrived. And he’s not here to talk.”
