Chapter 3: The Ghost from the Past

The rain beat down heavily on Christopher’s face as he stood in the middle of the dark driveway. Beside him, Arthur Vance stopped, catching his breath, looking at Christopher with confusion.

"Christopher? What's wrong? Why did you stop?" Arthur asked, wiping the rain from his glasses.

Christopher raised a hand to silence the lawyer, his focus entirely on the phone pressed to his ear. "What did you say about Rachel?" Christopher demanded into the receiver, his voice tight. "Rachel passed away three years ago. Who are you?"

The voice on the other end chuckled, a cold, metallic sound through the encryption filter. "Rachel died, yes. But her secrets didn't die with her, Christopher. You think Emma is the primary heir because your father loved you. You think he left her the fortune out of grandfatherly affection. You have no idea what your father actually discovered before he died."

"Tell me what you want," Christopher hissed, his eyes scanning the dark perimeter of his estate. The massive security walls were supposed to keep the world out, but right now, it felt like the danger was already inside.

"I want the black ledger from your father's private safe in the study," the voice said. "The one with the gold seal of the Monroe estate. Juliette was supposed to find it for me, but she got greedy and tried to handle the child herself. She failed. Now, you will deliver it to me."

"And if I refuse?"

"If you refuse, the forty million dollars currently moving through the global banking system won't just disappear. It will be deposited into an account tied directly to a terrorist financing network in the Middle East. By tomorrow morning, the FBI will raid your mansion, Christopher. The Pierce name will be synonymous with treason. You will go to prison, and Emma... Emma will become a ward of the state. And we both know what happens to little girls who get lost in the system, don't we?"

Christopher's blood ran cold. The calculation behind this attack was flawless. It wasn't just a robbery; it was a total destruction of his life.

"How do I know you actually have the money?" Christopher asked, trying to buy time as he signaled to Arthur to start tracing the call on his laptop.

"Check your phone's banking app right now, Christopher. I just left you a little tip."

The call clicked and went dead.

Christopher immediately opened his secure banking portal. His eyes widened. The balance of the primary Pierce Group operating account hadn't just gone down—it had dropped to exactly $1.00. Beneath it, a new pending transaction showed a transfer of fifty thousand dollars into Christopher's personal checking account with a reference note that read: “For your cooperation.”

"Dammit!" Christopher slammed his hand against his leg.

"Christopher, what is it?" Arthur asked, showing him his laptop screen. "The trace failed. The signal bounced through seven different countries in less than three seconds. Whoever this is, they are using military-grade cyber warfare protocols."

"It's not just a cyber criminal, Arthur," Christopher said, his face hardening as he looked back at the glowing windows of the mansion. "They knew about the safe. They knew about Rachel. They knew about the gold seal. Someone inside my father’s inner circle is running this."

"What are you going to do?" Arthur asked, terror evident in his voice. "If the money hits those blacklisted accounts, we are ruined. The government will freeze all our domestic assets within hours."

Christopher didn't answer immediately. He looked down the driveway toward the gatehouse where Juliette was being held. "We need to talk to Juliette. She knows who this man is. She was working for him before she decided to try and drown my daughter."

They sprinted the remaining distance to the stone gatehouse. Christopher threw the door open. Two security guards stood at attention, but the room behind them was empty. The window at the back was shattered, glass littering the floor mixed with rainwater.

Juliette was gone.

One of the guards looked at Christopher, his face pale with shame. "Mr. Pierce... we’re sorry. A black SUV pulled up to the gates two minutes ago. Men with suppressed weapons got out. They took her before we could even draw our firearms."

Christopher stared at the broken window. The trap was closing around him, and he was running out of time. He turned back to Arthur, his eyes burning with an intense, quiet rage.

"Arthur, get back to the house. Protect Emma and Yvette. I’m going into my father’s study. It's time to open that safe."
