Chapter 4: The Secret Ledger

The study of the Pierce mansion was a room filled with history. Heavy oak shelves held thousands of leather-bound books, and a massive portrait of Christopher's late father, Charles Pierce, hung above the marble fireplace.
Christopher walked into the dark room, his wet footsteps squeaking against the polished hardwood floor. He didn't turn on the main lights. Instead, he used the flashlight on his phone to illuminate the wall behind his father's portrait.
He pushed the heavy painting aside, revealing a modern, high-security digital safe built into the reinforced concrete wall. This safe didn't use a standard keypad. It required a physical key, a combination code, and a retinal scan.
Christopher pulled a heavy silver key from his neck chain—the key his father had given him on his deathbed. He inserted it into the lock, turned it, then entered a twenty-digit sequence of numbers representing his daughter's birthdate. Finally, he leaned in, letting the red laser scan his eye.
A soft click echoed through the quiet room, and the heavy steel door swung open.
Inside the safe were stacks of old documents, historical land deeds, and a single, thick book bound in black leather. On the cover, stamped in faded gold ink, was the crest of the Monroe family—Rachel’s family.
Christopher pulled the ledger out, his heart beating rapidly. He sat down at the heavy mahogany desk and opened the first page.
The handwriting belonged to his father, Charles Pierce.
“If you are reading this, Christopher, it means I am gone, and the wolves have finally come for the inheritance. I pray you have found the strength to protect Emma. She is not just your daughter, Christopher. She is the legitimate owner of the entire Monroe industrial fortune—a fortune your mother and I spent thirty years trying to absorb into the Pierce Group through illegal corporate manipulation.”
Christopher gasped, dropping his phone onto the desk. He turned the pages frantically. The ledger contained a detailed record of financial transactions dating back to the 1990s. It showed how Charles and Estelle Pierce had systematically bankrupted Rachel Monroe's parents, stealing their shipping empire through forged contracts and corrupt politicians.
Rachel hadn't been a poor girl from a modest background as Estelle had claimed. She was the sole survivor of a wealthy dynasty that the Pierces had destroyed. And Charles Pierce, filled with guilt in his final years, had left the entire combined Pierce fortune to Emma as a way to return what had been stolen.
"So that's why you wanted her gone," a voice spoke from the shadows of the doorway.
Christopher snapped his head up. Standing in the entrance of the study, holding a glass of scotch, was his older brother, Thomas Pierce. Thomas was a playboy who spent most of his time in Europe, supposedly managing the family's international hotel acquisitions. He had arrived back in the country just two days ago.
"Thomas," Christopher said, his hand slowly sliding over the black ledger to cover it. "What are you doing here? I thought you were staying at the downtown hotel tonight."
Thomas walked into the room, a mocking smile on his face. "And miss all the family drama? Please, Chris. I heard the shouting from the courtyard. I saw Juliette get dragged away—well, before her friends rescued her, that is."
Christopher’s eyes narrowed. "You knew her friends were coming for her?"
Thomas took a slow sip of his drink, leaning against the edge of the desk. "Let's just say I know a lot of people, Christopher. New York is a small town when you have enough money. Or, in your case, when you used to have enough money."
"You're working with them," Christopher said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper as he stood up from the chair. "The phone call I just received... the man with the encrypted voice. That was you, wasn't it, Thomas?"
Thomas laughed, shaking his head. "Me? A cyber criminal? Come on, Chris. You know I don't have the patience for computers. But I do know who is on the other end of that phone line. And trust me, you don't want to keep him waiting. He’s a very impatient man."

"Who is he, Thomas?!" Christopher shouted, slamming his fist onto the desk.
"He’s someone who wants revenge for what our father did to the Monroes," Thomas replied, his smile disappearing, replaced by a cold, sharp glare. "And he’s currently sitting in a car outside the front gates, waiting for that ledger. If you don't give it to him in five minutes, Chris, your little daughter is going to pay the price for our father's sins."
