Chapter 7 - The Choice

The transition was brutal. Months passed, and the company slowly began to stabilize under Isabella’s iron-fisted but fair leadership.

Damian worked harder than he ever had in his life. He started in shipping, learning the names of the warehouse staff, sweating in the loading docks, and experiencing the reality of the business he had once treated as a toy. He stopped calling his mother, stopped listening to Vanessa’s whispers, and stopped looking for shortcuts.

One evening, he returned to the manor. He found Isabella in the dining hall, just as he had on that fateful night. But this time, the tension was gone.

"The board approved the new charter today," Isabella said as he entered. "You're officially off probation."

Damian walked over to her. He didn't sit down at the head of the table. He pulled out the chair next to her.

"I don't want the CEO seat back," he said quietly. "I’m not ready. And I don't think I ever was. You were the right choice for this company all along."

Isabella looked at him, searching his face. For the first time in years, she saw the man she had fallen in love with.

"I’m stepping down as interim CEO," she told him. "I've appointed a new board. We’re going to run this as a partnership. No more secrets. No more vaults."

Damian reached out and took her hand. It was the first time they had touched in months. "I have a lot to make up for," he whispered. "But I’m not going anywhere. If you’ll have me, I want to rebuild this, not as a legacy of power, but as a home."

Isabella smiled, a genuine, warm smile that reached her eyes. The fire alarm was silent, the mansion was peaceful, and for the first time, the Cross empire—and the people within it—had a future worth fighting for. They were no longer master and servant, or husband and wife divided by secrets. They were partners, finally standing on equal ground.
