Chapter 2 - The Morning After

By 8:00 AM the next morning, the financial district was in a state of high alert.
Inside the penthouse boardroom of Montrose Towers, Isabella sat at the head of a massive mahogany table. She had traded her midnight-blue evening gown for a tailored, charcoal-grey power suit. Her hair was pulled back into a sleek, professional low bun.
Before her sat her father, Alistair Montrose, a man whose formidable reputation made international market regulators tread carefully. He looked at his daughter with a mixture of pride and quiet intensity.
"You endured four years of their disrespect, Isabella," Alistair said, leaning back in his leather chair. "I must admit, I doubted your patience. Most would have broken within the first year."
"I needed to understand their financial structure from the inside, Father," Isabella replied, opening her tablet. "If I had taken control of Cross Enterprises openly, Damian’s legal team would have tied up our assets in court for years under the guise of marital property. But by letting them believe I was powerless, they routed all their major holding structures, loans, and secret offshore accounts through the subsidiary banks we quietly acquired last year."
She tapped her screen, projecting a massive web of financial data onto the boardroom wall.
"Damian’s company is currently leveraged at eighty-five percent. They survived the last fiscal year only because I personally authorized a bridge loan of forty million dollars through our front company, Valo Holdings. Today, that loan is due. And I am recalling it."
"And what of the mother’s beloved estate?" Alistair asked, a rare smirk playing on his lips.
"The land the Cross mansion sits on was leased from a municipal trust fifty years ago," Isabella explained. "That trust was bought out by Montrose Development last month. Technically, Evelyn Cross is living on my property. I’ve already drafted the eviction notice."
Meanwhile, across town at the Cross Enterprises headquarters, Damian was living through his worst nightmare.
His phone had not stopped ringing since dawn. The stock price of Cross Enterprises was plummeting, dropping fifteen percent every hour as major institutional investors quietly pulled their capital.
"Damian!" Evelyn panicked, bursting into his office followed closely by Vanessa. "The bank just froze my personal accounts! They said there is an outstanding audit on the family trust! I can't even pay the staff at the mansion!"
"Mr. Cross!" his lead attorney yelled, rushing in without knocking. "We have a massive problem. The board of directors at Valo Holdings just filed a motion for immediate liquidation of our assets. They are claiming default on our forty-million-dollar bridge loan."
Damian slammed his fists onto his desk, his breathing ragged. "Valo Holdings? Who the hell owns Valo Holdings? Call their CEO! Offer them whatever they want—shares, board seats, anything!"
The attorney looked at Damian with genuine pity. "We tried, sir. The parent company of Valo is the Montrose Group. And the newly appointed Chairwoman of the Board is... Isabella Montrose-Cross."

The room went dead silent. Damian felt a cold sweat break out across his neck. The pieces of the puzzle were finally falling into place, and the picture they formed was terrifying.
"She didn't just leave me," Damian whispered, staring blankly at his desk. "She’s erasing me."
