Chapter 7 - The Mastermind Unmasked

Over the next two months, the dominoes fell with terrifying speed.
Deprived of bail, Vanessa spent her time sitting in a high-security women's correctional facility awaiting trial. The isolation and loss of control shattered her fragile sanity. Within weeks, she began turning on the very people who had spent thirty years protecting her: our parents.
From her jail cell, desperate to secure a plea deal that would reduce her impending twenty-year prison sentence, Vanessa agreed to sit down with state prosecutors for an official proffer session.
I sat beside Eleanor Vance behind a one-way mirror in the district attorney’s interrogation suite, listening to the audio feed as Vanessa spilled every family secret to save her own skin.
"It wasn't just me!" Vanessa cried into the microphone, her hair unkempt, her skin pale and sallow. "My parents made me this way! Ever since I was a teenager, whenever I got mad and broke things, my dad told me I was superior to everyone else! He told me consequences were for poor people!"
The prosecutor, Ms. Blake, leaned forward. "Vanessa, let's talk specifically about the event on October 12th. Did your mother tell you to lie to the police?"
"Yes!" Vanessa blurted out without hesitation. "While Claire was calling 911, my mother pulled me into the pantry and told me, 'Say Ruby tripped over the rug. We will tell the doctors she hit her head on the coffee table. If you admit you hit her, Richard and I will lose everything.' My dad was the one who told me to send that text message to Claire!"
"The text message threatening to disown her if she didn't tell the police Ruby fell?" Blake pressed.
"Yes! My dad drafted the text! He typed it on my phone and made me press send!" Vanessa sobbed uncontrollably. "They knew about the digital camera system on the fridge! My dad installed it three years ago specifically to monitor the house cleaners! He thought he deleted the Cloud folder right after the paramedics left, but he didn't realize the system automatically backed up to a secondary drive!"
Behind the glass, I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.
For my entire life, I had believed that my mother was simply a weak, overprotective parent and my father was a quiet enabler. But listening to Vanessa’s confession laid bare the dark truth: my parents were the architects of this nightmare. They had cultivated Vanessa’s psychopathic entitlement, sheltered her from every consequence, and were fully prepared to sacrifice Ruby's life and justice just to preserve their pristine social standing.
Two days later, the District Attorney executed simultaneous arrest warrants for Richard and Evelyn Hayes.

Local news station cameras were waiting outside their gated community as sheriff's deputies led my father out in handcuffs, his expensive suit rumpled, his head bowed in shame. My mother was escorted out right behind him, covering her face with a silk scarf as neighbors watched from their front yards, whispering and taking videos on their phones.
The grand facade of the prestigious Hayes family had completely collapsed.
