Chapter 10 - A Beautiful Horizon

Two years later.

The morning sun broke over the coastal beach, painting the sky in brilliant hues of gold, pink, and deep violet. Ocean waves lapped gently against the white sand, carrying the cool, fresh scent of salty air.

I sat on a wooden bench on the boardwalk, a warm cup of coffee resting in my hands.

Fifty yards away near the water’s edge, Ruby was running through the wet sand, laughing hysterically as a golden retriever puppy chased after her floppy pink sunhat.

At eight years old, Ruby was a picture of vibrant life and joy. She wore a stylish pair of custom purple-tinted glass frames that protected her left eye while subtly aiding her spatial vision. Her laugh echoed across the quiet beach, pure and untouched by the trauma of her past.

Beside me on the bench sat Dr. Marcus Vance—the forensic expert who had helped win our case, and who had over the past two years become my closest friend, my rock, and the man I had come to love deeply.

"She’s getting fast," Marcus smiled, watching Ruby throw a tennis ball into the shallow foam for the puppy. "I think she’s going to outrun the dog by next summer."

"She gets that from me," I laughed softly, leaning my head against his shoulder. "Running toward freedom."

Marcus wrapped his warm arm around my waist, pulling me closer. "How are you feeling today, Claire?"

I looked out at the vast, endless horizon of the ocean.

After the trial, I had closed the chapter on my past completely. I sold our city apartment, moved to a charming coastal town three hours away, and launched my own successful boutique interior design firm—appropriately named New Light Designs.

My parents and sister were still serving their prison sentences in another state. They had tried to send letters to me over the years—begging for visitation, asking for forgiveness, crying about their ruined lives—but every single letter was returned unopened, stamped 'Address Unknown'.

I had learned an invaluable truth: Family isn't defined by blood or shared genetics. Family is defined by the people who protect you, who honor your worth, and who stand beside you when the storm rages.

Ruby turned toward us on the sand, waving her arms wildly in the air, her tinted glasses catching the golden sunlight like a pair of jewels.

"Mommy! Marcus! Look!" she shouted, pointing at the sky where a pelican was soaring gracefully over the waves. "Look how bright the sun is today!"

I stood up from the bench, took Marcus’s hand in mine, and walked down the warm sand to join my daughter in the light.
