Chapter 4 - The War Begins

Three days later, Ruby was stable enough to be discharged from the hospital, though she was required to wear a protective eye patch and undergo weekly physical and psychological therapy sessions. I packed up our bags from the hotel we had been staying at and returned to our apartment in the city, five hours away from my parents' town.

I changed the locks, installed a high-tech security system, and enrolled Ruby in a private home-schooling program while her facial fractures healed.

However, the war had only just begun.

On Monday morning, I met Eleanor Vance at her high-rise office in the legal district. She was an imposing woman in her late fifties, with sharp silver hair, immaculate tailored suits, and eyes that saw straight through pretense.

She laid out three thick paper folders on her glass conference table.

"Here is where we stand, Claire," Eleanor began, tapping the first folder. "The District Attorney’s office has officially indicted Vanessa Hayes on two major felony charges: Aggravated Child Abuse with Permanent Disfigurement, and Felony Assault. Because of the clear video evidence, the judge set her bail at $500,000. Your parents liquidated their retirement savings over the weekend to post her bond."

I gritted my teeth. "Of course they did. They wouldn't spend five hundred dollars to buy Ruby a birthday present, but they'll spend half a million to keep Vanessa out of a jail cell."

"Let them burn their money," Eleanor said calmly. "It won't save her. But there's more. Yesterday, your father’s defense lawyer reached out to the DA. They are attempting to launch a smear campaign against you."

"Against me?" I gasped in disbelief. "I wasn't even the one who touched Ruby! I was being pinned down!"

"They are claiming that you are an unstable, negligent mother," Eleanor explained, opening the second folder and showing me sworn affidavits signed by my parents. "They are alleging that Ruby’s eye injury was the result of a previous fall at your home that you failed to treat, and that Vanessa merely reached out to grab Ruby to keep her from falling off the kitchen chair. They claim the video footage is 'ambiguous' and was taken out of context due to camera angle distortion."

I felt a surge of rage so intense that my vision turned red. "They are lying! They are lying under oath! How can they do this to their own granddaughter?!"

"Because abusers and enablers operate on one principle: self-preservation," Eleanor replied coldly. "Your parents know that if Vanessa goes to prison, their reputation in their wealthy suburban community is destroyed. More importantly, they realize that if Vanessa is convicted, they will face criminal charges for physically holding you back while a child bled on the floor."

"What do we do?" I asked, my knuckles white as I gripped the armrests of my chair.

Eleanor smiled—a sharp, predatory smile that made me realize why she was the most feared attorney in the state.

"We don't just defend, Claire. We destroy their narrative completely," Eleanor said, pulling the third folder forward. "I have hired Dr. Marcus Vance, a renowned forensic pathologist and biomechanics expert. He has analyzed the high-definition video frame-by-frame, matching the angle of impact on the table edge with the precise fracturing of Ruby's skull. His report proves scientifically that the injury could only have occurred through violent, deliberate downward force applied by an adult hand."

Eleanor pulled out a flash drive and slid it across the table to me. "Furthermore, Detective Miller executed a formal search warrant on your parents' secondary Cloud storage accounts yesterday. Do you know what he found?"

I shook my head, my breath catching in my throat.

"Years of deleted household camera footage," Eleanor revealed, her voice dropping to a serious tone. "Footage spanning the last seven years. Videos of Vanessa attacking family members, smashing furniture, throwing hot coffee at housekeepers—and videos of your mother and father systematically bribing witnesses, paying off victims, and deleting evidence."

I stared at the flash drive in awe. "They didn't just cover up this attack on Ruby... they've been running a family cover-up operation for years."

"Precisely," Eleanor said, leaning back. "And in two weeks, when the preliminary hearing begins, we are going to play those videos in open court."
