Chapter 1 - The Midnight Call

The neon light of the hotel marquee flickered against the wet pavement as Isabella stood outside the grand entrance of the Grand Crest Hotel. Rain began to fall, fine and cold, but she barely felt it. Her knuckles were white where she gripped her smartphone, the screen still lit from the brief, decisive phone call with her father, Arthur Vance.
Inside the glass doors, Marcus was still smirking. Beside him stood Chloe, his assistant turned mistress, lounging carelessly in Isabella’s bespoke silk robe, the antique sapphire brooch pinning the lapel—a priceless heirloom given to Isabella by her late mother. The security guards who had marched Isabella out stood at attention, uncomfortable under the sharp glare of hotel guests whispering in the lobby.
Marcus took a step toward the glass doors, looking out at Isabella with smug contempt. "Make sure she doesn't linger on the property," Marcus instructed the head of security, his voice echoing through the marble lobby. "She's trespassing now."
"Of course, Mr. Sterling," replied Arthur Vance's former protégé, security chief Daniel Vance—no relation to the patriarch, but a loyal employee nonetheless. Daniel looked down at his radio. It was vibrating violently.
Simultaneously, every administrative screen, management tablet, and executive phone across the Grand Crest luxury chain emitted a sharp, synchronized emergency chime.
Inside the presidential suite administrative room, the chief financial officer’s phone rang. In the manager’s office, the printer burst to life, spewing out emergency executive orders stamped with the gold crest of Vance Global Holdings.
Marcus’s personal phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, expecting a congratulatory text from a board member regarding their latest expansion. Instead, the screen read: SECURITY CLEARANCE REVOKED - IMMEDIATE LOCKOUT.
"What is this?" Marcus muttered, tapping furiously on the screen.
Before Chloe could ask what was wrong, Daniel’s radio crackled to life with the voice of the corporate VP of Operations: "All security personnel, stand down immediately. Freeze all executive assets associated with Marcus Sterling. Re-key the Presidential Suite. Escort Mr. Sterling to the management office immediately."
Daniel looked up from his radio, his face pale. He looked at Marcus, then through the glass doors at Isabella, who stood calmly in the rain, folding her arms.
"Mr. Sterling," Daniel said, his voice cold and formal. "I'm going to have to ask you to hand over your master keycard."
Marcus blinked, a laugh of pure disbelief escaping his lips. "Have you lost your mind, Daniel? I run this company! I built this chain!"
May you like
"You ran it, Mr. Sterling," Daniel corrected softly. "You never owned it."
Through the heavy glass doors, Isabella watched as the shift in power occurred in real time. The trap set eleven years ago had finally sprung.
