Chapter 5 - The Trial of Truth

Three months later, the marble corridors of the federal courthouse were packed with reporters and cameras.

Sarah sat in the front row of the courtroom, looking healthy and beautiful, her pregnancy now at nine months. Daniel sat beside her, his arm wrapped tightly around her waist, his eyes fixed on the defense table.

Richard and Jason sat in their prison-issued jumpsuits, their hands chained to their waists. Jason looked broken, his eyes sunken and dark. Richard sat with his head bowed, his former arrogance completely replaced by a hollow, defeated stare.

The prosecution’s star witness was Dr. Charles, a forensic mechanic who had spent the last two months analyzing the vehicle from Sarah’s mother's fatal crash ten years ago.

"Your Honor," the prosecutor said, projecting a series of highly detailed technical diagrams on the large courtroom screens. "We have uncovered evidence that the brake lines on Helena Robertson-Cross's vehicle were deliberately severed prior to her fatal accident. A digital log retrieved from an old hard drive in Richard Cross’s private study shows a search for 'undetectable brake failure' performed the night before her death."

A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom. Sarah buried her face in Daniel’s shoulder, her tears wetting his suit jacket. She had always suspected, but hearing the scientific proof of her mother’s murder was a pain that cut deep.

"We also have a signed confession from Jason Cross," the prosecutor continued, turning his gaze to the younger defendant. "Who has agreed to testify against his father in exchange for a reduction of his attempted murder charge to accessory after the fact."

Richard turned his head slowly, staring at his son with a look of pure, venomous betrayal. But Jason refused to meet his eyes, weeping silently into his chained hands.

The judge looked down at the defendants, his expression stern and unforgiving.

"In my thirty years on the bench," the judge said, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom, "I have rarely seen a display of such systematic, cold-blooded greed and cruelty within a family. Richard Cross, you are sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Helena Robertson-Cross and conspiracy to commit murder against your daughter. Jason Cross, you are sentenced to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary for your role in the assault."

As the bailiffs led the two men away, the courtroom erupted into applause. For Sarah, the sound of the heavy metal doors closing behind them wasn't just the sound of justice—it was the sound of her finally being free.
