Chapter 2 - The Hidden Legacy

By 3:00 AM, the lights of the intensive care unit cast a sterile, blue glow over Sarah’s hospital bed. She lay hooked up to multiple monitors, a nasal cannula providing oxygen, her right leg braced in a splint.

Daniel sat by her side, his fingers laced through hers. Every time the fetal heart monitor dipped, his heart stopped, but the nurse assured him that the medication to halt the labor was working. The baby was holding on.

"Daniel..." Sarah whispered, her eyes fluttering open. The pain medication made her voice slurred, but her grip on his hand tightened. "The baby... is he..."

"The baby is safe, sweetheart," Daniel said, leaning down to press a soft kiss to her forehead. "He’s a fighter. Just like his mom. The doctors stopped the contractions. You're both going to be okay."

Tears slipped down Sarah’s temple. "Jason pushed me, Daniel. He looked me in the eyes and pushed me. And my father... my father just watched."

"I know," Daniel said softly, pulling out her phone. "And so does the voice recorder. Sarah, they mentioned a trust on the tape. They said if you lost the baby, it would save them a 'custody fight' for it. What were they talking about?"

Sarah blinked, her mind foggy but suddenly racing. "My maternal grandfather... before he passed away, he was a wealthy real estate developer. My father always told me that grandfather died bankrupt, leaving nothing but debts. But when I was cleaning out my mother's old desk last month, I found a sealed letter addressed to me, dated the week before she died in that car accident ten years ago."

"What did it say?"

"She said there was a legacy. A trust fund worth over thirty million dollars, left entirely to me and my future children, managed by an independent offshore custodian," Sarah whispered, her chest heaving. "She wrote that my father was trying to find a loophole to dissolve it, and she was going to the police with proof of his financial fraud the next day. But... she never made it to the police station. Her car went off the bridge that night."

Daniel felt a chill run down his spine. The puzzle pieces were falling into place.

Richard didn't just hate Sarah because she was different. He hated her because she was the gatekeeper to a fortune he couldn't touch—and her pregnancy meant the trust would permanently lock out any claims from the Cross estate once the child was born.

The door to the private room opened quietly. Arthur Vance, the city's most formidable criminal defense attorney and a close family friend of Daniel’s, stepped inside. He looked at Daniel, his expression grave.

"Daniel, I listened to the audio file you emailed me," Arthur said quietly. "It’s enough to arrest Jason for felony assault, but Richard’s involvement is trickier. His defense will argue he was just a bystander. We need more than just the tape to bring down the whole empire. We need to prove the motive."

"We have the motive, Arthur," Daniel said, his voice turning into cold iron. "It's a thirty-million-dollar trust, a dead mother, and a decade of systemic financial fraud. And we are going to expose every single bit of it."
